What to send?
Permalink Closed

I found out last night that my grandfather passed away. I wasn't very close to him and have only actually met him maybe three times in my life. I'm sad nonetheless, but perhaps more so for my Dad since he doesn't really handle this type of thing very well. He has flown off for the funeral today, but my brother and I would like to send him something for when he gets back, just to let him know that we're thinking of him and are sorry for his loss. He's not really a flowers kind of guy, so does anyone have any ideas of something thoughtful to send for this type of situation?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

oh wow.  that is hard. Was there a request to send donations to a charity? You could do it in your dad's name on behalf of your grandfather's memory.  How far away does your dad live from you? If he is going to take it hard he isn't going to cook or eat right so a meal of some type would be good.  You could order him a honey baked ham and he could eat off of it for a week. Just an idea. When  my grandmother died in August we appreciated the food people made for us because none of us were in the mood to cook and we certainly would have either eaten junk or nothing at all if it wasn't for what people brought us.

lsu's idea about the charity is a nice idea, if they have one set up.

i think i was a jewish grandmother in a past life, becuase to me, funerals = food.  i think it's always the right thing to send and it's comforting and thoughtful.  a platter from a nice deli with meats, cheeses, and bread is nice and will last a little while.  sometimes flowers are not the best idea to send to someone at home (although perfect to send to the funeral home) because they actually serve as a reminder of the sad event after it is over.
