graduation dress for day ceremony
Permalink Closed

I'm graduating on May 13 (Friday the 13th!!!!!) I didn't want to hijack Detroit's thread since even though I need a graduation dress too, my graduation is totally different.

  • Commencement starts at 8 AM (we have to line up at like 7 AM!!!! argh!!!!), and I have a satellite ceremony as well that will start right after the big one ends. The satellite ceremony will last until 2 PM-ish
  • Temps usually are going to start at 60ish and go to high 70s-low 80s.
  • My cap & gown is going to be cardinal with gold trim (USC colors)

(here's a visual...I can tell this is going to be one flattering cap and gown)

  • I need a knee length or shorter dress since my calves are muscular and stubby. Plus said dress should be able to accomodate my 36C boobs.

I would be liable to wear a bikini under my graduation gown, but alas, I will probably have to go somewhere with my family afterwards.

I have the dress version of this Cigana top...would it be too formal/weird? I would love to wear it because no one else will.

What about this Anthro dress...I could use an excuse to get it and I might finally have one. Except that I'm worried four other girls will show up in the same dress since there are at least three Anthro stores in this town.

Or would a really brightly colored Lilly Pulitzer be more appropriate for the ceremony? I could probably find one at Loehmanns.

I have the bronze strappy sandals from AK Anne Klein that a lot of girls on the forum bought last year (the name of the style was Kira, I think) that would probably work with the first two dress ideas.

Beyond that, I am clueless. I haven't had to deal with dressing for graduation since I was 13!!! Help!!!

I'm willing to dish up to $300, and I would like to be able to wear the dress again. So, suggestions would rock!

EDIT: In a truly perfect world, I would wear this dress. But alas, that's like four months of my salary...LOL. What's sadder is that some people at my school can afford to drop $1500 on their graduation dress.

These all have varying degrees of straps, so you would probably be able to get away with a regular bra with most.

this is just my personal opinion, so do with it what you may.  while i like the cigana top a lot, i think that the graduation is a big life-moment where you are probably going to have a lot of pictures taken of yourself that you are going to be looking at for the rest of your life, and that maybe be a bit trendy and overly-fashiony and you might be unhappy that you wore it.  you might think about something a bit more subtle (the anthro dress is perfect, i think, and if you're looking for an excuse to buy it...).  plus, that top has a lingerie vibe, which might be seen as a bit disrespectful of the event by people who are older.  basically, i am saying ix-nay on the cigana, yay on the anthro dress.

Oops I thought I already responded to this but I must have gotten distracted!

Anyway, I think you should just wear something that you will feel comfortable in and will be appropriate for wherever you go afterwards. I think I just wore black slacks and lord knows what kind of top to my college graduation because it was chilly and we didn't go anyplace special afterwards.

The Cigana dress is really pretty although bumblebee makes a good point. All of my graduation pictures are just of me in my robe though so you can't even see what I wore.
I thought someone posted a review of that Anthro dress and either said it wasn't flattering or just wasn't pretty in person but I don't remember who it was.

Dude...I'm totally lusting after that anthro dress for my graduation! Looks like a lot of us have graduation on the brain...anyway though, I think it's totally classy and appropriate for a day ceremony. And as for other girls wearing the same dress, it probably won't matter much anyway - you'll be wearing your cap and gown most of the time, right?

I wish I had more dresses to post, but not much has struck me. I really like these anthro dresses, but I get the feeling you want some more diverse options:

Has anyone seen this dress in person? Is the aqua color really this pale?

thanks everyone!!

LMonet: I love these dresses! I do have a couple of weddings to go to in June with two different crowds so I was also going to use my graduation dress as a wedding dress.

style #1037184 available sizes: 4 style #1045529 available sizes: 0 2 4 6 8 10 Lauren by Ralph Lauren Pleated Silk Georgette Dress

(yes no one will send me the memo that it's spring, so I'll wear my teals and chocolates and deep reds in the blazing heat. )

bumblebee: Thanks so much for your opinion. I actually wasn't so much thinking about the grown-ups there...

cc: I tried on the Anthro dress I posted back when it first came out and I loved the way it fit on me (accomodated chest, accentuated waist, went right over my hips). I'm just trying to justify a $158 price tag for an Anthro dress...

ShielsBabe: I feel exactly the same way you do...nothing in my price range is really inspiring me. I like the first aqua dress, but I think it will be too pale against my golden skintone.

BTW, here's an actual pic of me (sans my head) in the Cigana dress with the Anne Klein shoes I'm talking about. I haven't worn this dress anywhere yet so as far as I'm concerned, it's a new dress. (pardon the mess)

Wow, maybe the Cigana dress would be appropriate! It looks great on you (so much better than in the picture of the top alone) and I don't think it's wierd at all. If you feel comfortable in it, call off the dress hunt! Although, if the anthro dress fit really well, maybe you should buy it anyway - between graduation and weddings, you'll have a lot of opportunities to wear it.
