Hospital basket for mom?
Permalink Closed

Don't worry - my mom is fine... just getting a knee replacement. She'll be in the hospital almost a week and then I am going down next weekend help Dad to care for her for a few days after her surgery. But before I head down, I want to send something to her in the hospital while she's there to perk her up - hopefully ASAP after her surgery which I *think* is tues.

I know she'll be getting tons of flowers. Also, Dad will be staying with her. So I was thinking that something edible might be nice - hospital food blows and they can share food.

What do you think - maybe cookies and such from Mrs Fields (they make cute baskets), or perhaps a mix of fruits, cheeses, and sweets from Harry & David? She is very healthy (no joke - swims over a mile a day with her master's swim team!) and my dad is diabetic and not supposed to eat too many sweets...

Anyone have any ideas or opinions? Know of anyone else who can deliver something great to my dear Mom (and Dad, since he'll be there). TIA!

First off dc, best wishes to your mom on a speedy recovery.  It is really nice of you to help out your dad...such a good daughter:).

I love the idea of the Harry and David fruit basket.  The thought of their pears have my mouth watering right now, swoon...

dc! my best wishes to your mom! i hope she has a super speedy recovery.

i think your ideas are great. i just wanted to suggest dean and deluca as well. you can order from ready-made baskets on their site or call them directly and they can pick out stuff in the store specially for your tastes. like you could fill it will all healthy things like fancy green tea, fresh fruit, nuts, fresh breads and baked goods, kitchenware, dishes, whatever! they have been very helpful in the past when i have used them for the office.

Harry and David make the nicest gifts. Their quality is so good, too. I know that if I got one, I would start feeling better immediately!! She'll love whatever you give her, just knowing that you care enough to buy her something will cheer her up, I promise!

dc, check out www.ediblearrangements.com.  They make fruit baskets that look amazing (they are made to look like flowers).  I've seen them in person and they are beautiful.  I'm not sure where your mom lives, but it looks like they deliver in DC.  Ever since I discovered this company, I've stopped sending flowers or cookies.  People really like it since it's healthy.

And best wishes to your mom!  I hope she has a speedy recovery!

I made up a basket for my mom when she was in the hospital the last time...but I didn't put food in it. I wasn't sure what or if she'd feel like eating what with all the crazy drugs they put people on. I filled it with books and magazines, a crosstitch kit, a goofy picture of the family, just a bunch of stuff to occupy her time while she was there and stuff she could do while recovering at home too.

I second this...one of my bosses got this sent to her office and it was the coolest thing ever to see the fruit that way.

DC - make sure that the hospital will allow fresh fruit to be delivered.  Some floors do not even permit fresh flowers (sometimes these things can carry bacteria.....)

How about ordering a few books or games from Amazon?  I'm sure they can arrange for them to be sent to the hospital.  The Harry & David or Mrs. Fields thing is a great idea, too, but when I think of being in the hospital, I think of total boredom.  I would want to get her something entertaining especially since she is so active usually.  So, books are my suggestion, or a board game that isn't too hard to play using a hospital tray (if enough people will be visiting to make it worth it).  Or crossword puzzles.

Thank you so much to all of you for the ideas and the wishes for my dear mom. Last night I picked out a fun basket I think she'll like with food, games, teas, etc. ("Dr's Orders" basket) from bogartsgifts.com, a company that detroit knows well. They were really nice. I'll hold on to all of your ideas for the future as well!
