Exercising + Eating...I know its been brought..
Permalink Closed

I am having a major problem on Thurs esp but in general when I do heavy exercising (weights + cardio).  I get hungry and usually eat a lot the rest of the day.  Like on Thurs I eat lunch (usually a turkey sandwich from home and grapes) and then go work out 45 min weights 40 min cardio and drink lots of water but then I'm starving and I eat my reserve snack: apple. Then class comes along and I'm still hungry so snack time comes (yes we have snacks in college) and its junk food but I still eat it and then eat dinner at home.  Should I try eating something different for lunch? Am I not eating enough that day and that's why I'm pigging out? I am actually losing weight so its not affecting that necessarily...

i've always been told that if you're doing any weight training, you SHOULD eat protein within 30-60 minutes after your workout.  it helps build muscle.  try an apple and cheese slices or something...

Usually I rotate between a bagel and banana or oatmeal and a banana.  Lately I've added cereal and milk with a banana to the rotation.

What are good sources of protein that don't have to stay cold as I don't get to go home on thurs between classes?  I'm going to try apple and cheese on tues though.

i totally get what you're saying!!!  when i used to swim competitively i would come home starving.  i was too lazy to make anything, so i would eat cereal (not great) and i still lost weight.  then as i got older and i took nutrition (section on sports fitness) in college and learned that a great option would be protein, wheat crackers, and tomatoes.  so i make kebobs for when i get home.  chicken, cheese, tomatoes on the kebob, and four crackers.  one kebob is perfect (and i think they're cute)  that's just a suggestion.

I'm not sure of the protein content, but I always keep a ziplock bag of 1/4 cup almonds in my purse. Hummus is great too or yogurt if you're willing to invest in an insulated lunch bag.

your snacks need to have some carbs and protein. some examples:

wheat crackers w/ peanut butter

apple w/ string cheese

soy chips

rasins and almonds mixed (a handful)

1/2 a protein bar - myoplex makes yummy apple cinnamon ones

Thanks yall.  I'm going to have to see what I can find in the grocery store that can sit out for hours at a time.

sounds like you're not eating enough...the snacks suggested sound good...

here are some other options:

1/4 cup of trailmix

1/4 cup of almonds and a piece of fruit

apple with 2 TBSP of peanut butter

yogurt with a serving of fruit

balance bar and a serving of fruit

from what my uber-athlete boyfriend tells me, after you work out your metabolism is kicked up so you kind of have a free window to eat.  so if i were you i would try to kill your hunger with good fat/protein/carb stuff (like lola suggested) and not worry too much about calories in that time period.

the almonds are a good suggestion too.  i find i can eat a small amount of almonds/trail mix after working out and not be crazy starving.

Totally agree with the almonds suggestion...I keep a bag of dry roasted almonds from trader joe's in my desk drawer and have 4 or 5 whenever I get hungry but I know a meal is coming up. A couple snacks I'm fond of lately:

Wasa cracker with a Laughing Cow Light cheese cube or hummus spread on top

Salt and Vinegar Soy Chips

Half or a third of a Luna bar (Toasted nuts n' cranberry is so good)

Pear/orange and a couple almonds
