well, i literally JUST learned a couple of months ago (took a class at a knitting shop- it was really fun)-- so right now I am not knitting anything beyond scarves! But, there are all kinds of cute things I want to knit... I am going to try a little knit purse next. i'm not so good just yet :)
Knitting is fun. Or how about a language class or a drawing class? Most bigger cities have an art league or community college where you can take inexpensive classes. Or you just pick something you think is interesting and read books, visit museums, etc. to learn more about it.

well, I'm going to start taking a ballet class in a few weeks (I used to dance and I really miss it) so I dont want another class type thing. Really just looking for something to keep my hands busy at home so that I don't just get bored and eat. I might tru knitting- I did that a few years ago but never had the motivation to fiish anything, so maybe I'll try again.

I take ballet, too. Love it! Deciding to go back to class as an adult is one of the best decisions I ever made.

What about pilates or yoga. That will stop you from eating and help you get fit at the same time.
You could also do collage. It's fun if you have a lot of magazines sitting around and you don't know what to do with them. You use mod podge and a brush and just cut and paste really. It's kind of fun to flip through the magazines and cut out pictures that you like.
I like kickboxing. Actually, I love kickoxing. I need to start a club in my new town because there isn't one. Knitting looks like fun, though, and it's great for the holidays becaue you can just make scarves.
Mara, Did you take a class at a local shop or a national store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby? I'm trying to find something like this around me & the local shops are booked for MONTHS. I'm one of those people that may just give up if I don't do it when I get the itch. Do you think I could learn from a book?
I really want to make some funky scarves.

I took the class at a local shop and it was great. I think it would be really hard to learn from a book, to be honest... its the kind of thing that to me, would be really confusing in print. :(
If you beg your local place they may be able to squeeze you in earlier... always worth a try :)
I am late in this convo - but I wanted to add I learned how to knit last week - I have already made myself a scarf and I started two others today. I am having a good time with it - I can't wait to get really good at it so I can start being really creative.
I know what you mean about a hobby! I took up some old things I used to love to do when I was younger and they still make me happy.
I paint and do crafty projects. I go to cool shops around town (vintage, boutiques, galleries, whatever) and look for inspiration. Then I head to Hobby Lobby or some other such place and buy some supplies and get going. There's nothing better than being able to say: "I made that." For instance, I saw this great 12th street shirt that was a plain gray tee with a stripe of sequins on it. I can make that! (I haven't yet but it's on my to-do list when I get some free time.)
The next time I get fundamentally out-of-sorts (aka bored) I'm going to audition for a community orchestra. Or maybe a play.
Also, I'm moving into my very first 2-bedroom in May and I'm going to set up a creative room. I'm going to put all my painting stuff and crafty stuff and my sewing machine so I can really start using it in a space that works.
