not really tie die - it's fabric that is dyed so it fades from dark to light http://www.dyeproservices.com/ombre_dyeing.htm

tie die consists of actually tying the fabric and dipping it into mulitple colors - very different than ombre. Ombre is fabric that is dyed so it fades from dark to light.

I can't imagine any better way to describe it - it's also very easy to just plain see the difference. Anybody else have a better definition?
