Are we going to do Secret Santa again this year? I wasn't sure about the state of everybody's finances and ability given the current economic issues but if we're gonna do one this year, we should probably start thinking about it.
I did a search and here's the dates that were used last year, with adjusting for this year: Secret Santa sign up deadline: November 24 Secret Santa notification: December 1 Secret Santa wishlist and/or like/dislike list: December 1 Mail deadline: December 15
What do you all think? Is it too much this year?
ETA: Okay....so keep dates above, spending is limited to $10-$15, and theme is "Thrifty Giving"?
Hee..what about a theme of "Fabulous Christmas in a Financial Crisis"?
Also, I can help organize this...but I'm assuming that I'll need some help. But honestly, I have no idea what organizing this entails, so I would love if someone from the past who did organize it could send me a PM with details.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. If you want to organize it, you're welcome to.
What if we reduced the spending to a creative use of $10 or $15? It could really bring out the bargain shopper in some of us... I personally enjoyed scouring sale racks and flea markets for unique gifts and the most bang for my buck.

I totally want to, and I like the $10-$15 idea. I think a lot of us are hurting a bit more for cash than in the past, and especially with all the sales this year I think $10-$15 could buy a pretty cool present!

I think a lower budget is a great idea! I think the participants may need to take it into account when we do the likes/dislikes thread too - in the past people have gotten really specific or given only a few expensive items they'd like, and with the 'theme' restrictions it's been difficult to find, well, anything!
What does everyone think of doing away with the theme altogether, or simply making the theme just being creative on a budget? Thrifty Gifting? It seems like it would be very difficult to find something that fits the budget, the recipient's taste, and a theme ....

yay! I'm in! I totally regreted not doing it last year.

I'm totally in and loving the theme "Fabulous Christmas in a Financial Crisis". My purse strings are going to be tight this year so I am gladly accepting the challenge of getting creative on a budget!
Here are the rules from last year, and ladysi was the coordinator, and I believe she used spreadsheets provided by the previous year's coordinator to keep track of who has who and who shipped (I will provide access to the email account):

relrel, I would be thrilled if you spearheaded this. I'd be happy to do it, but I'm leaving for two weeks on saturday and would not be able to manage it remotely.
if you are unable to get in touch with past SS coordinators, I'd be happy to create a spread sheet and instructions for you. email me at kris@stylethread.com and I'll get you set up!

What if you divided it up into segments and people could pick which group they want to gift exchange? Like vintage/flea market, etsy/craft, retail store, beauty products for example?
I like doing away with a theme and just doing Thrifty Gifty. Maybe instead of dividing it into groups as fairlight suggested, we could just add which one of those most interests us in our lists of likes and dislikes. That way, it's less work for the organizer and we're still all part of one big group exchange and we won't have to worry about one group having two people and the other group twenty (makes it easier to keep Secret Santa a secret).
I'm in! I was just thinking about this and wondering if I should do it b/c of finances, but with the thrifty theme, how can I resist?
I've been seriously into budget shopping this year but I donate most stuff to a local charity. It gets my shopping fix in and I can get completely useless things, if it's a good deal, because I donate it. Sounds counter-productive but feels really good.
Ooh! I'm in! Was so busy w/the wedding last yr I didn't get to participate. Love the "Fabulous Christmas in a Financial Crisis". theme Luv2Shop suggested! Sooo excited!
