There is this spray you can buy at pets stores called "bitter apple spray" or you can make your own spray which is tabasco sauce and water. This is what my mom does because we have plants all over the house and my cat chews them. It seems to work pretty well. She usually does not go back for seconds.
We also have "cat grass" that the cat is allowed to chew. I hope that if I give her grass she is allowed to chew then she will stay away from the stuff she is not allowed to.

Honestly, I've given up on having houseplants with my cats. I've tried bitter apple spray, a spray called "Cat Away", and Cayenne Pepper. They also seemed to make the cat even more interested in the plants.
Keep a spray bottle nearby - when they start chewing on the plant, give 'em a few good squirts and hiss at them at the same time. Eventually, you won't have to spray them anymore, just hiss and they'll get the point and (hopefully) will tire of the game. Or, get fake plants.

You can try placing sticky tapes (I just used scotch in little rolls) on the area around the plant. I did that on a few of my windowsills to keep my cat out of the blinds and it's worked so far. she doesn't even attempt to look out of those windows anymore.
