getting rid of acrylic nails

I have worn acrylic nails for about 6 years.  In the past year my workload has increased because I took on some more responsibility at work.  I have also really started sewing alot and I heart.gif it.   I have gotten to where I resent going and getting my nails done even though I like the way they look.  However, I have heard that long acrylic nails make you look older. confused  Anyway, I have such a workload that I feel the hour I spend getting them done and the two hours after that I spend letting them dry and set is just a waste of 3 hours of my life that I could spend sewing.  I have tried the nail dryers and the spray and I still have to wait a couple of hours before I can do anything.  I tried awhile back to go without them, but I could not seem to leave my nails alone. I bit them and they looked horrible.  I think I really want to try not wearing them.  Has anyone here ever stopped wearing them after wearing them for awhile?  Can you give me any advice on how to not bite them?  I don't bite my acrylic nails off because they are expensive.  That is another thing.  I would save money.

I've never had fake nails before but couldn't you just buff them and put a coat of nail polish on to keep yourself from biting them?

There is some stuff called No Bite that you brush on your natural nails like nail polish.   It has an awful taste that discourages you from even putting your nails near your mouth.  I bought some at Walgreen's a while back.  You might try it to see if it helps you.

I stopped wearing mine about 6 months ago ( after probably 5 years of wearing them ...). I did this originally to save money. Then I realized that fake nails are so out. Everywhere I looked people my age had cute short manicured nails and I realized that maybe they were a little "old". It took about 2 months for them to grow out all the ridges in them and look healthy again, but now they look great.

I am also a nail bitter, so I just keep them nice and short and keep polish on them to not bite them. I am able to do them at home now too, so it saves $$ and time and I think looks more up to date.

yay! I personally think fake nails are super yucky, so congrats on deciding to give them up!

I bite my nails too, so usually what I do is get weekly manicures (or do it myself) and then it prevents me from biting them because I don't want to mess up the polish.

I think this is good advice.  I used to bite my nails in high school.  I had tried the bitter no-bite and it didn't work for me.  Somehow having braces got me to stop altogether.  If you haven't bitten your nails in a while, you are already off to a great start to quitting this habit.

It will be really tempting bite your nails after removing the acrylics because they won't be in great shape for several weeks.  If you get weekly manicures in place of acrylics, I bet it will discourage you from messing with them.

Woohoo no more acrylics! I agree this style is way out, and I always associate it with certain people who still rock the look. Natural is classier IMO.

To stop yourself from picking, as suggested above, I'd make sure to rock a nice manicure at all times. I'd recommend some sort of nail-building system like Nailtiques where you put protein-laden polish under a color, then add a coat of clear every few days. This will help nails grow, help restore them, and also as the layers get thicker, will prevent you from biting.

I agree that acrylic nails seem dated to me. My MIL has them, so there you go. There are so many good reasons to go natural, so I think it's a great decision.

If you haven't bitten your nails for six years, maybe you won't start again? I'm not a nail biter so I don't know how that works.

Maybe using a heavily scented hand lotion would help remind you to keep your hands away from your face?
