vidal sassoon ion select hair dryer
Permalink Closed

my hair dryer caught on fire about a month ago, so i decided to hold off on buying the new hair dryer i really want (shopping ban) and buy an inexpensive hair dryer for now with some gift cards i got from returning xmas gifts.

i decided on the vidal sassoon professional 1875 ion select.  i got it a jcpenney and it was $30-ish (i have since seen it at other stores priced anywhere from $17.99-$25, but this should be covered in another rant about jc penney.)

this is the worst hair dryer i have ever used.  i HATE this hair dryer. HATE HATE HATE

  • first of all, it has no power.  (my bf has informed me that it has low cfm -- which i guess is some measure of how much air is pushed out per unit of time)  it doesn't blow hard enough to properly style my hair.

  • the "professional rocker switches" suck ass.  they are really stiff to move, and if you get them to move at all you have to push so hard that there's no stopping at the middle setting.  you can kind of see them in the picture -- they are rounded and just really hard to use.  if i have to stop in the middle of drying my hair, i'll put the thing down and leave it running instead of turning it off b/c it is such torture to battle those switches any more than necessary.

  • it will get really really hot, so hot that it's almost too hot to use sometimes and other times barely hot enough to feel -- on the same heat settting, and without any rhyme or reason.  when it's too hot, switching it from hot to warm doesn't seem to help.

  • as far as the "ionic" aspect of this dryer, i don't see any difference from my old regular dryer.  this is not to disparage ionic hair dryers in general -- the other sucky aspects of this one could be overwhelming the ions.

  • it is also very heavy compared to other hair dryers i have used.

so as much as i hate this thing, i didn't return it as planned b/c i got too busy.  i am now doomed to endure the hell of the vidal sassoon ion select until my shopping ban is lifted.

I have this too and it SUCKS. I agree with everything you said. It also does something that always makes my hair look weird and flat, regardless of the products I use or if I turn my head over.

Thanks for the info.  I'm in the market for a new dryer and I'll stay away from this one.  I have a Conair Ion Shine and if I keep using it, my brain is going to explode.  I get so mad at it.  The flippin cord won't straighten out and it keeps coming unplugged from the wall.  It's so wound up that I have about 2 feet of cord to work with.  I keep forgetting to get a new one when I go out.

Great info, thanks!  I posted a while ago about ion hair dryers and am in the market for one.  I'll keep looking.
