Help! My hair stylist lightened my hair wayyyy too much.

Hey ladies,

I just got my hair highlighted, and even though I told her to use the colors she used last time, I don't think she did. That, or she left it on too long because it is way too blonde - it's a lot lighter than last time. She told me she used vanilla and butterscotch - um, that should have been a hint. My hair is naturally on dark side of light brown. Vanilla? No wonder the streaks look whitish. She even used a toner, so I can't imagine what it looked like before that.

Can I buy a semipermanent hair dye a few shades darker than what it is now and apply that? How long do I have to wait? I'd like to get some lowlights too to darken it up a bit, but I'll have to wait longer to do that, right?

I'm serious - it's so bad, I cried when I came home. I haven't done that in a while.

I think you should call the salon!! At the very least, they can tell you what to do. But if you explain that you're having a problem because your hair looks totally different than last time, they should re-dye it for you for free!

Hmm, I'm not sure if that would work - I hate confrontation. Also, when I was in there, some unhappy customer came in who had gotten her hair done a few weeks prior, and it had faded a lot, and they were going to charge her (less than normal, but nonetheless charge her). Also, only two people work there - I'm serious! and when I called to make my appointment, they called me back two days later. The service isn't the greatest. I only go there because it used to be cheap (I think the prices are increasing).

I would call the salon and explain that your hair looks much lighter this time than last time you got it colored there, and you'd like their advice on using a semi-permanent color to tone it down a bit.  At the very least they could give you their professional opinion on the shade, a brand, time to leave it on, etc, but hopefully they'd just offer to tone it for you again at the salon free of charge.  If they don't offer, you're still coming out with some guidance on the drug store job, nobody has their feelings hurt and you don't look bitchy for complaining.

Thanks ladies! I think my stylist is off tomorrow, and the owner is in. I'll call tomorrow before I do anything to mess it up.

In my experience, the salon should redo it for free if you are that unhappy with it!

Even though I hate confrontation, I would call the salon.  If they don't satisfy you, you could go to Sally's and those ladies there could help you pick out a toner that would tone it down.  There is a toner called Born Blonde that comes in different shades.  Also, Natural Instincts can be used as a toner.  I think it explains how on their website.  It comes in various shades of blonde.

It makes me so mad when colorists do this furious.  I know people make mistakes, but I can make mistakes on my own hair for alot cheaper than I can pay a colorist to do.  That is why I have started doing my own color (not highlighting).  Can you tell I have had some bad experiences?biggrin

You might want to try sending a PM to Erin. I haven't seen her on here in a while, but she can really give you some great advice about how to get your color back to where you want it.

Thanks relrel - I was hoping she would see it, but you're right - I haven't seen her on here lately.

I actually haven't called the salon. I'm scared! I have no backbone sometimes, which is no good. ashamed I bought a shampoo for brown hair, which has toned down the highlights a bit. In any case, my friends claim that my hair looks the same as it did before Friday (I disagree). I'm going to go to Sally and see if they can recommend a toner.
