Who do I have to kill?!?
Permalink Closed

Seriously, who do I have to kill to get money back from the state when it's time for taxes??  Last year I had to pay a little over $200 and this year I still have to pay $39, even though I've been having extra money taken out of every paycheck for the last year to go towards state taxes!!

I'm severely pissed off that I have to keep paying them every year, no matter what I do, although I'm now going to have even more taken out of every paycheck for state.  I'll still probably owe the b*stards next year again too.

Taxes suck.

Sorry, had to vent...

it depends if you would rather have the government take your money and earn interest on it or if you want to have it and earn interest on it and pay them the remaining taxes you owe in the end.  If you claim 0 deductions, the government will keep more of your money, increasing your chances of a refund.

maybe you should talk to an accountant.  imo state taxes are a lot trickier than federal taxes b/c the rules vary from state to state. i also think that with state taxes if you do it yourself you should look at the actual form and go through each part of it by hand as opposed to doing it online and just answering the questions.

i learned this the hard way b/c i work in one state and live in another. so the first time i tried to do my state taxes online, h & r block said i had this huge bill to the state of nj for $600+ which was crazy to me b/c it wasn't like i was not paying the taxes, they were just going to the state of ny (and my refund from ny wasn't enough to cover the bill to nj). anyway after i sat down with the forms and went through each part line by line i learned that nj gives you credit for taxes you pay to another jurisdiction, which reduced my bill to like $80 which was much more reasonable.

anyway the point of this long story is talk to an acct.

I think I do claim 0; I'll have to double check though.  Even if I am, I'm blaming my state for sucking.

I also did the TurboTax thing online with my brother.

The other thing that pisses me off is what my state taxes are going towards:  stupid crap like a freakin' indoor rainforest!  Who needs a rainforest in the middle of Iowa?!

Sorry, I really do need to breathe deeply...

I think honey is more accurate than I was - the state is handled differently than the federal.  Democratic party government in your state by any chance? If that's the case, voting in a different party government is the only way I can figure you can lower your taxes.

lol!  but i will say this, when i switched from having ny (rep. govenor & rep. mayor) to nj (dem. govenor) taxes deducted from my check i got $30+ more back each pay period so dems aren't all about taxes. though i guess this is debatable since both are considered pretty liberal/democratic states.

I think the govt here is mostly republican actually.    And yeah, unfortunately voting is the only chance I have to voice an opinion on taxes.  Sigh....

Apparently, there was a bill (?) brought up that would basically say that anyone under the age of 30 wouldn't have to pay state taxes.  If only it had passed (which would have been a long shot).....

thank you for your pleasant response yeah - NY state republican govt. is equal to democratic govt. in most other states - little more liberal - more reflective of the people as government should be in all states.

Oops..  You know, as I read that, I actually knew that; I was still thinking of the former governor, who was a Republican.  Politics don't really interest me so my brain takes awhile to catch up.

Oh dear lord, now I feel stupid...

This is the first year EVER that I haven't had to pay the state. And after I got married, I changed it so that I am getting a huge chunk taken out for it.

Also, look into donation programs in your state. Here in AZ, we have a school tax credit...you can donate up to $250 to a school and then deduct that amount from the money you owe the state (or it gets added onto your refund). We donated the full amount and are getting back about $100, which means that if we hadn't donated, we'd have owed around $150. Personally, I'd rather have my $$ go to the schools than to those bureaucrats.
