Going off the pill pt 2
Permalink Closed

So this was my first period after stopping the pill several weeks ago.  It sucked so bad.  It was so heavy and I suffered through the worst cramps I've had in a very long time.  To make matters even worse, I broke out with painful acne.  Also, I'm sprouting chin hairs that I never knew existed.

I did not experience the weight loss or gain in libido that I had expected!

I'm thinking of going right back on the pill bc it seems like my natural womanhood is not fun!  Am I too quick to judge?  I don't want to risk another 2 months of misery to find out.

Just two quick thoughts:

1. Yeah, one month is a short time to "test the waters". Give a couple of months and see what happens.

2. How long have you been on the pill? Depending on when you started and how old you were at the time could really change things. For example: I started on the pill when I was 18 and went off (to go onto the ring, but was off of any BC for about four months) when I was 28. My hormones and metabolism are completely different now than they were ten years ago- and that will totally play a huge part in how your body will react.

Good luck, though!

I agree on everything relrel said.
One month is not enough to understand what might be going on, so give it a couple of more months. And you body might have changed since you started taking the pill: when I was in high school I never had pain, cramps, etc, now I have to take ibuprofen for a couple of days when I get my period.

Also, you moght want to try a milder pill: when I was "young", I was taking pills that really affected my weight.
The one I am taking now is much lighter, and it has not affected my weight at all (if anything, it kills my appetite a little bit).

It sounds sort of like you stopped mid-pack - am I reading that wrong?  If so that can really throw things off.

Anyway, I agree w/the other girls that 1 month is just too short a time to determine how you feel off the pill.  What you're experiencing right now is likely your body readjusting its hormones, not what 'normal, regular' feels like.  It usually takes about 3 months to adjust to a new pill, I'd give it at least 3 months to adjust back down before you make the call either way.  And unless you were reacting significantly to your pill, I wouldn't expect maybe more than a 5 lb weight loss, and that would likely be over a few months time too.  I hear libido doesn't take nearly that long to resurface, though wink.gif!

I'm sorry you're having such a rough time of it though cry - an icky period isn't fun pill or no!  If you have health insurance, I'd consider going to your doc (primary care or gyn) and chatting about having some blood work done in another month or so.  They can check your hormone levels and see how things look which they can't do on the pill, and you might as well have them throw in a vitamin panel, thyroid (T3/T4 & TSH), etc if you're feeling like something else is 'up'.  Even if all your levels look fine (ask for the actual numbers), at the very least IMO it's nice to have a 'baseline' to judge any future tests off of if something goes out of whack later.
