I have not done this but have gone with a friend on a "job". She was mystery shopping a hotel and we just stayed there for free and she had to write up a little thing about it online. From what she says and everything else I've read, you should NOT have to pay any money whatsoever to become a mystery shopper. All you will get is a list of companies who hire mystery shoppers. This is a good website I found that explains what it's all about and gives some websites you can apply to.

Soooo not worth it, I tried it for a while. You have to fill out so much darn paper work. It's too much to remember and totally ruins your shopping experience. plus they send you to really lame places. It's not worth the little money they pay you.

There are companies that you don't have to pay to do it. I had a friend who did this. She was always compenstated for whatever she bought and we would go to resturaunts. They would send her to some lame places, but she also would go to some cool places. She went to a hotel and lots of restaurants.
