Lent special at KFC?
Permalink Closed

Maybe I should have put this in the Food/Dining section, but I thought it'd get more traffic here.  I was watching TV last night and a KFC commercial came on, advertising their $3.99 fish combo special going on for Lent!  I was completely floored!  To be honest, I was quite offended, but I'm not quite sure why.  It just seems wroooooong to me that they would aim their marketing at a specific religion/religious holiday.  Like they're capitalizing on people's sacrifices and simultaneously leaving non-religious people and/or those of other religions out in the cold.  It's not like you have to be a card-carrying Catholic to get the special price, but it still really bugged me.

What are your thoughts?

Upon initial reading, I too was offended by the singling out and catering to one specific religion. but then, a lot of restaurants offer fish dishes and clam chowder on fridays - and that's never bothered me...

I boycotted KFC years ago anyway for misleading advertising - just don't like that place, period.

hmmm...I've always known there to be cheese and veggie pizza deals on Fridays during lent all my life. Never really thought about it as singling out one religon.

don't be offended.  it's not like all the mardi-gras references are only used by Catholics either. Wasn't the fish on Friday thing a pre-Vatican II thing?  (early 1960's)?

wow, that's so crazy!  kfc fish??  that's the part that floors me!  anyways, i know mcdonald's has done this for years w/ the $1 filet-o-fish fridays which conveniently happens only during lent (did the kfc ad specifically mention lent?  McD's doesn't, but it's pretty obvious why they do it).  as a catholic i have no reason to be offended, aside from the fact that kfc is trying to capitalize on a people's religious beliefs.

exactly, kfc is really cheesy to capitalize on the religious belief.

I think its more of a thing to let people know that they have options for those who can't eat meat on fridays. While its usually catholics that can't eat meat on fridays, others usually like getting fish meals and stuff especially since seafood is usually in season during lent (esp crawfish).  I mean who really knows that KFC offers fish?  I know some other chicken places like Popeyes usually has shrimp year round.

i'm catholic, and i'm not offended or anything.  i remember going to our church on fridays during lent when i was a kid for a "fish fry" dinner--they made fish & chips for the adults and mac & cheese for the kids--it was quite the social event.  like lsu said, i think they're just letting you know there are options.
