haha, i know it sounds silly, i was just falling in line w/ the "happy mardi gras" post!  anyways, i already did a poll about what people are giving up (in the general polls section) so i just wanted to say hi to everyone on the first day of lent!

well, i'm not catholic, but i have decided to observe the giving up of something...  chocolate and alcohol.  which may be tricky, since i have v-day, best friends b-day, and my b-day in the next 2 weeks.  hope i'm not offending anyone by partaking in my own little lent like thing.

no way, tara t, that's not offensive at all!  over on makeupalley there's tons of non-catholics/lutherans/etc. who celebrate the "giving up something" aspect of lent.  i think it's nice that you would participate, even if it's not for the same reasons i do!

My dad was raised catholic, but I was not.  One major thing I miss about the east coast is the Friday Fish Dinners at the church......with pierogies (my favorite thing in the world)......*missing the east coast*

I love pierogies... there's a restarant in a town near me that has them on the menu - I always order potato and cheese - they're huge - after she boils them she sautes them in butter and onions and they form these little buttery light brown bubbles all over them... little bit of applesause on the side and extra sour cream... yummmmmmmmmmmmm

Pierogies are like dumplings. The basic kind is mashed potato with onions but there are lots of various with cheese, mushroom, sauerkraut, etc.

You can get them in the frozen food aisle and a lot of stores sell fresh ones too.
They are either boiled or fried. Mrs. Ts is the most popular brand I think.


My mom usually made potato pancakes on Fridays during Lent. I was always bitter that she didn't let us order pizza like every other family in the neighborhood.

omg - I looove potato pancakes too - we have a few german restaurants around here that serve them - same deal as the pierogies - applesauce and sour cream... good hangover breakfast food too

I love potato pancakes! I even loved them as a kid but hey, what kid wouldn't prefer pizza? There are so so many Eastern European restaurants in the East Village, it makes me happy to be able to stuff myself with latkes and pierogies on a regular basis!

Mrs. T perogies suck.  The only good ones are the homemade ones from the Polish Grandmas.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE the prune filled ones - I know that sounds disgusting, but they are amazing.  My grandma makes them 2 times a year:  for X-MAs Eve and Easter Sunday.  I cannot wait until Easter Sunday.......

Yeah Mrs. Ts are not very good but that's probably the kind that's available in most parts of the country. Actually, I've had another frozen brand that was so much worse than Mrs Ts but I can't remember the name. Most of the non-frozen ones I bought in supermarkets here in NYC are pretty good but I don't know how easy it is to find those elsewhere.

I've never tried prune but that sounds pretty cool. My family lives goes to this Russian deli a lot and they have something similar to pierogies but they are filled with cherries.

cc - my grandma is Lithuanian, so I am not too sure if the prune perogies are a polish thing, or a lithuanian thing.  I went to a polish restaurant once and ordered the potato cheese perogies, and they were fried and almost crispy.  The perogies I am used to are boiled first and then baked with sauerkraut so that they are soft.  Anyway, the prune ones are the best.  But I must admit that I have yet to meet someone else that has ever had them!

Yay lent! I decided (after cc mentioned a friend doing it) to go vegan for lent. I'm already a vegetarian, and I've always wanted to be a vegan. I just don't think I could handle it forever. Anyways, I've had one meal and all is going well.
