Sympathy gift...
Permalink Closed

A good friend of mine and his partner were in the process of adopting a sweet baby girl.  Her mother lost all rights to her after the baby's birth (she didn't want her anyway).  My friends had  been approved to adopt and they took her home at 2 weeks old.  It is now six months later and the baby's aunt has come forward and said she wants the baby.  They had to give her back today.  It just breaks my heart.  They were so in love with her.  She is such a happy baby and she would have had a wonderful life with them.  Their lives completely revolved around her.  I've spoken to them on the phone, via email and such, but I don't live close to them and I want to give them a sympathy gift.  I just can't seem to find anything appopriate.  I've been on a few florist's websites, and I just can't find anything.  I'm just at a loss.  I really need some help here.

have you checked redenvelope.com? they often have simple, understated presents.

totally might not be on the track that you're thinking, but a friend of mine's best friend was diagnosed w/ cancer and she sent her a giant tower of hershey chocolate from www.hersheys.com she said that it was well-received. here's a link to it:

My friend has a gift basket business and puts together a lot of sympathy baskets. A basket is nice because it is filled with things they can use vs. flowers that will die in a week.  Usually their sympathy baskets are filled with these huge muffins and cookies and things like that - stuff the family can grab to eat and share with visitors - they are one of her best selling products.  The only thing with the fresh baked item sympathy basket is perishability and sending it UPS - she knows more about this than I do. She is a stylethread member too - I gave her a call and asked her to pop on and give you some ideas... she said she'll post shortly.

Thanks so much girls.  I checked Red Envelope, and there are a few possibilities, but the only category this situation really fits into is sympathy, but she didn't pass away, so it's hard.  I want them to know there is hope for her.  There is still a slim chance they will get her back (if the aunt screws up somehow).  Ugh.  I am really interested in the gift basket suggestion.  They are out in Cali, so if I sent them perishables, it would have to be a quick ship.

I'm a new member - but my best friend is actually one of the person's who initiated this site.  She just called me and made me aware of your posting.  I am actually in the business of creating custom gift baskets for any occasion.  You can check out my website to see some of the varieties of everyday baskets I create at www.bogartsgifts.com - but we also do many "special" baskets for situations like yours.  This is a very sad thing that happened to them - and maybe a thoughtful comfort food type basket would be nice as they try to heal themselves.  The name of this basket is called 75 Ways to Calm Your Soul - because that is the name of the gift book enclosed in the basket along with breakfast jam, calming herbal teas, hearty soup mix, water crackers, fruit scone bites, gourmet coffees, pancakes and maple syrup.

All of our products are high-end, totally delicious and our baskets actually arrive as artfully as presented.  Price for this type of basket is $65 (normally $75) because I give stylethread members 10% off.  The UPS charge would be $15 to any location outside of Michigan and $11 to most locations in Michigan.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

cricket - this is such a tough time for them and your heart is in the right place, but i don't know that there is a gift in the world that is truly appropriate for this unfortunate situation. how about a simple card or letter with a sincere, caring note? maybe some flowers... the gift basket is a nice thought as well, but i think that putting your sympathies in words will mean the most to them. man... that story just breaks my heart.

We can ship out tomorrow via USPS (post office :)) and I can send it priority 3 day for you if you would like.  That's pretty decent time from Michigan.  Everything ships just fine in our baskets!  I know this would be a great idea for you...

Thanks again.  Purplehaze, I'll let you know if I decide to send the basket.  That sounds really nice.  Today I just want to get off a nice card and letter, though.  I just can't imagine anything that could cheer them up right now, so I'll just let them know that I love them and am here for them.
