I'm Nannying..........

So I am currently being a nanny -I guess I would say that.  One boy is 17 who is independent and the other is 12 - he is the one  that I'm more or less watching.  Their parents are out of town.

So last night was the Super Bowl and the 17 year old had all of his friends over to watch the game.  They were all drinking and getting stoned.  So I felt totally responsible for all of these kids that were drinking and felt put in an awkward position.  I called the mother to tell her just to let her know that a bunch of kids were drinking in the house and I would have felt awful if anything bad should happen.  I don't know my point except that I felt pretty awkward being put in this situation and calling the mom and feeling like a tattle tale. She talked to her son to put the drinks away.

 What would you have done?

I think you did the right thing. You and the parents would be responsible for the kids. If any of them got in an accident drving home then his parents would be suing you and the parents you were working for. It kind of sucks be the uncool tattle tale, but I think you did the right thing.

You definitely did the right thing.  Hopefully from now on those kids won't try to party with illegals while under your supervision again.

i would have totally said that and more because if anything happened, you would be held responsible including legally since you were left in charge. i would have probably laid the smack down and made everybody leave, only because i wouldn't want to be at risk of being held responsible for underage drinking, drug use, etc.

Never let any minor do anything illegal/irresponsible when you are around.  Liability is no small matter.   If anything at all had gone wrong whether at the house or after they left you would be liable and could possible face jail time.  Don't feel bad; it's your ass not those teens.

Yeah you definitely did the right thing. Unless you have something in writing saying you're *only* responsible for the 12 yr. old what everyone else said here is right - you could have been held legally responsible should any of those kids gotten into any trouble.

I would've tried to talk to the kids first and nip it in the bud, but if it got to far I would defintely call the mom. It's rude of the kid to put you in that position.
