Can anyone get a mammogram? Kind of TMI
Permalink Closed

I always get cysts in my left breast from my BC (when I'm not on BC I dont get a period at all, so its a lose lose situation) but lately my left breast has been feeling different, i guess is the only way to describe it. It feels like there is a hard mass, very different than a cyst.  Anyway, I know my Dr. will tell me its nothing to worry about, but I have breast cancer in my immediate family on both sides.  Im only 20, but I would just feel better if I got a mammogram.  Can I request one? Will insurance still pay for it if I do? Thanks.

Anyone can get one, but that doesn't mean that your insurance will pay for it. Insurance usually doesn't start picking up the cost of mammograms until a certain age (40, I think). They only start picking up the cost earlier (around age 30) if you are at risk of breast cancer.

Yup.  First, I'd call your insurance company and ask what their benefits are in this situation, and if your docs office needs to write it up/bill it in a specific way for it to be covered.  Then talk to your doc and the billing specialist at their office, if they have one, to make sure things will be done correctly for your insurance purposes.  You could also inquire about the cost/procedure of having a biopsy, in case the doc feels the need.
