question for you moms

My little 2 1/2 year old daughter melts my heart. The other day she hurt herself and while I picked her up to comfort her, her cries subsided, and she got distracted by the gold and pave-diamond necklace (a Mother's Day gift from DH) I was wearing. She fingered the pendant and said sniffling, "I wanna buy it." And then the other day while I was getting her ready for a bath she touched my necklace again and, with a sweet little smile, said the same thing.

OK, I'm not gonna buy her diamonds, but would it be crazy for me to buy her a child's necklace at this age? She is by no means spoiled materialistically, but when sometimes when she asks me for things, all I want to do is give it to her! Of course my concern is that she will lose it or it would get broken on the playground or something.

Is there a reason you can't get her that looks really similar, but is totally fake? I'm betting you could find something at a Claire's Boutique type place.

That's the route I would take. While working in retail, a customer was in with her one year old who had on diamond earrings, which I assumed to be fake. But then the little girl lost one and her mom flipped out, turns out they were real. Real diamond earrings on a one year old, not the smartest of ideas.

I have a 20 month old daughter and my parents bought he a cute little gold necklace for her while they were in Dubai. I only put it on her during special occasions because it is like 18 karat gold, she pretty much does not toy with it. She loves accessorizing..she'll point at the necklace and say "momma dis pwetty"  it has a matching bracelett too. Which I think is just too cute! *LOL*

I don't think there is anything wrong with it, but I wouldn't spend to much. You should buy it with the expectation that she will most likely break or lose it. That way if she doesn't, well great, but if she does you were expecting it and hadn't spent much on it.

This is the route I'd go.  I'd wait until she's older to buy any actual pieces of jewelry for her - I received a few pieces for different milestones, but not until I was an older child.  By that time I understood that those things were delicate and expensive and needed to be handled carefully, and they were given for special occasions which gave them meaning for me as keepsakes.

Thanks girls! I will try to find something at Claire's. I hope I can find something with a short enough chain for her.

Glad to know I'm not a crazy mom who spoils their kids with ridiculous things!
