I need help with an eBay issue 2nd chance?
Permalink Closed

I bid on an item and lost and the next day received a "second chance" e-mail from the seller, through eBay.

Has anyone had any experience with these "second chance" items? I am inherently suspicious because it was only a day or so later and...that seems to early to have decided the first buyer wasn't going to pay (although perhaps that isn't the reason). The other reason I am iffy is because the item is in Australia and the seller only takes money orders and not Paypal. The seller has 1 negative feedback (out of 65 - the rest are glowingly positive from buyers and sellers), over a year ago, and it was from another seller, not a buyer. The item is about US$220 and is somewhat (not totally) rare, so I am not sure why she would have two?

Anyway...advice, pls.?

Don't do it!

DCS recently had a bad experience when she bought something directly from a seller. You will have no recourse if they screw you, especially if it's international!

I think the 2nd chance offer is just as legit and you have the same protection and feedback opportunity if you choose to accept it.  Maybe the highest bidder emailed her to back out?  Maybe you should ask her the circumstances that caused the 2nd chance offer.  I guess it just all depends on how much you want the item.

That's my feeling cc - it is a re-auction, tho'. She put it up again at my high bid, so I could leave a negative stating she totally ripped me off, if she did so, and she sells a lot so...? I think I am going to e-mail her and ask if I can Paypal a friend or something.

EDIT: FP, I am just about to send her an e-mail asking about the circumstances. If she says she has two of the items well I will be VERY suspicious.

Mia, I got a second chance e-mail for an auction I was outbid on. I did buy the wallet and everything turned out fine. I don't remember what the reason was that the seller had for not selling it to the winner though. why don't you e-mail her and ask?

CC, the 2nd chance offer isn't the same as buying directly from the seller off of ebay.  If you accept the offer it is the same as if you won the item.

i would accept it, but if you pay via money order you should get one that can be tracked and or cancelled. though it would be best to see if you can go through paypal.

I've e-mailed her so I will wait to see what she says...:)

Thanks for the advice...it would seem to be legit because she sells a lot and I don't see why she would rip me off after building up such good fb from buyers but...you never know, and if she did, it's not like I'd have any recourse with her being in Australia etc.

Ohh I get it now. Sorry for my strong reaction!
Is this second chance offer a new thing? I've never heard of it before.

The money order thing would make me a bit nervous though so definitely make sure you get one that you can cancel.
