What would you do?

So, I subleased my condo to a few girls in my sorority for the summer. I moved back in today and the place was a disaster area. There were dust bunnies EVERYWHERE, all their shit all over the place, trash bags that needed to be taken out, six empty wine bottles on the counter. It hadn't been vaccuumed and the microwaved looked like a horror movie had been filmed in there.

I kind of want to say something to them, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or not. I'm not super close friends with them or anything but we still see each other and hang out a lot, so I don't want to burn any bridges when everything is said and done. It's just that I would NEVER leave someone's home (my family owns the condo and I will live here until I graduate) the way I found it today.

Should I say something or just let it go? If yes, how would you say it, in an e-mail or in person?

Thanks!

Hey girls,

Could you all do me a favor and help me clean the apartment? It was kind of a wreck when you all left and since my mom's coming into town to check up on the place on [insert date], I'd really rather not have her see it in the shape it's in right now.

Thanks in advance!
the other jess

maybe?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I already cleaned it...I probably shouldn't have, but I can't stand the yuck.

I'd mention it casually to them, if only to make them aware of the fact that leaving a friend's place a disaster area is freaking rude!  Who the hell did they think was going to have to clean it, besides you?

Next time, I'd collect a cleaning deposit when you sublease.  At least that way you'll be paid for your time if you end up having to clean the place wink.gif.

Oh, I would mos' def say something passive-aggressive. Something like "So, it looks like I missed some good parties this summer. My condo looked like the alley behind Joe's Bar when I moved back in. And thanks for not vacuuming, because it helped CSI collect samples for their investigation into whatever died in the microwave."

Seriously though, what kind of b-tch-s would leave a friend's place looking like that??

I'm sorry to hear that this happend to you! That's just rude. Since you've already cleaned it up, it's up to you if you really want to mention something about it or just let it go. I would mention it, but that's just me. But for the future, you now know what to do in case you ever sublease again.
But just know that friends would never disrespect your place like this. So keep that in mind and never trust them too much.

This was a perfect response and should keep you on good terms as it is not confrontational

I think this is a lessoned learned type of situation. Don't let those girls ever lease the condo again, and if you do choose to lease it in the future, you should be specific about the condition you expect it to be left in and perhaps have the person make a refundable deposit that includes cleaning services.
