Foundation for really fair/pale skin?
Permalink Closed

So, I was recently told by a make-up artist that the foundation I'm using is too dark. However, it's the lightest shade that Dior makes. I've run into this problem before with MAC.

Does anyone know which brands carry extremely light/fair foundation with warm undertones?

I know this is kind of beating a dead horse, but I like Bare Minerals. I also have the same problem as you - a lot of brands don't make anything light enough for me. Boo!

I am pretty pale (actually wear Fairly Light in BE) and have found that I am able to wear Chanel Matte Lumiere, BE, Estee Lauder, Clinique and that spray foundation that they show on What Not To Wear.

Its hard bc when you're at a makeup counter, I feel like most people will sell you the lightest shade even if its too dark just because they don't want to turn you away.

I think that's exactly what happens to me. They always tell me it's the right shade, and then I go look at it in the daylight and it's too dark.

Out of the brands that you mentioned, which has the lightest shades?

Also, when you say the spray foundation from WNTW, are you talking about the Dior spray?

I have worked in cosmetics/ beauty and been a makeup artist on and off for about 8 years - I have either worked with many of the prestige lines or used them myself. I'm not sure what you're looking for in your foundation, but if your skin is fairly clear, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer is hands down an amazing product. It also contains SPF 20 and Retinol, and it disappears right into my skin (I'm also fair and have always had a hard time finding something that wasn't too dark or didn't look orange-y) It looks like I'm not wearing makeup but I can tell the difference for sure.
The price is pretty great too - $11.99. I think it's one of those things like the Maybelline mascara - even if I use high end on the other stuff, this drugstore product is the best of its kind!
Try getting it at a drugstore that has a return policy for makeup so you can test it out.

Also be sure you take back the foundation that's too dark to Dior - even if you've used it, they should at least give you a credit that you can use on other things like lip gloss or eyeshadow. Too many people end up wasting money on cosmetics that didn't work out because they don't know or think to return them!

p.s. - did I miss the post on where you took those pictures? You look gorg!

Thanks Hermione! I've been using Stila's tinted moisturizer right now because it has a little coverage and I know it isn't too dark.

Also, I did take back the Dior foundation. For $70, there is no way I was eating that cost!

Is the Neutrogena stuff like a tinted moisturizer?

As for the photos -- I did a pin-up shoot thing a few weeks ago. I'll have to post more photos when I have a chance.

Yes, the Neutrogena's stuff is similar to a tinted moisturizer - I like it much better than Stila's though. It seriously is one of the best things I've ever used. I just use concealer around my eyes and pop on the Neutro stuff and my skin looks naturally flawless, or close to it!

- I'm glad you took back the Dior!

(oh yeah, I remember the pinup post - I do want to see more!)

I'll look in to it tonight. I need to stop by the drug store anyway for something else.

Here's a photo from the shoot. As you can see I am very pale, lol:

I'm using Clinique Supermoisture in I think #2 and It's pretty light.  It's has a hint of shimmeryness which brightens up the face.

In clinique I'm a #1, but even that is slightly darker/orangey compared to my skin.

Great picture! I'm probably as pale as you are (if not paler in some areas - ouch) and I use a tinted moisturizer mixed with my regular moisturizer and it matches my skin perfectly. Before that I always used a powder because I don't really like foundations for one, and for two, they never matched my skin color. My skin is too dry for a powder anymore so hence the switch to TM.

I recently purchased the Boot's No. 7 TM based on MUA reviews. I mix it with my Aveeno Positively Radiant, spf 30 moisturizer and voila - instant perfect skin. I put about a pinkie-sized nail of each product (maybe a tiny bit less TM) in my palm and mix together before I put them on. I cover my neck and exposed torso area as well. I sometimes add a little concealer, blush, mascara, lipstick, and I'm out the door. It takes about 3 minutes total. If I'm really invested, I put on eyeliner (Stila espresso) and eyeshadow (kitten) and THEN I'm out the door (an extra minute, maybe).

I've been really impressed with the No. 7 stuff. I used Stila's TM but it sometimes got a little grainy on me and it was a bit expensive for such a small amount. (Maybe if I'd been mixing it with reg. moisturizer like I do now it would have lasted longer.)

Kitty, sorry I didn't respond earlier! The spray on WNTW is NOT Dior, its called ERA by Classified Cosmetics - I think available only online. In Estee Lauder I am Ecru or Linen, and in Chanel I was Beige. I dont remember what color the ERA Spray was, and it has rubbed off of the tube (I like this stuff because it is buildable). You might also like Laura Mercier's TM. I remember they made a shade paler than what I wear.

I always try in the store then either take it home figuring I have a 50% chance of returning it or I ask for a sample (Sephora will give you a small jar size, enough for several applications).
