"statement shoes"...on the cheap?how to choose?

my clothing style is generally "classic"- but lately Ive been thinking i need to add some edgyness. statement shoes seem like a way to go....but i am very out of my element. how can you tell what pairs are chic and what pairs are way over the top?

I would like to buy a couple of inexpensive pairs (under $150) to experiment with. any recs? so far these have caught my eye

I like the look of the Steve Maddens better, but they are most likely torture devices so I say the NW.

I can definitely see where you're going, but my concern about the particular pairs you posted is that the high ankle straps might make them less versatile.  Do you have any heel height limits or other criteria?  I have a couple pairs in mind I've seen around ...

I would like to keep the color neutral (no patent leather) with a 4.5 in heel max- just for wearability purposes

i feel like a child buying her first pair of big girl shoes.........!

FYI...I have the nine west gladiator pair, and for some reason they are VERY uncomfortable. I think it's a combination of the height, and all the straps...
