so sick of my diet!!!--a little long

I am sick of my diet.  I don't know if you would call it a diet--more of an eating plan.  From Monday through Thursday I keep my calories under 1100.  (I know that is not good--ya'll chastised me before about it) and then on Friday and Saturday I eat pretty much like I want and then on Sunday I really pig out.  This plan is working at keeping my weight where I want it.  However, I am about to be off work for the entire month of July and I know I will not be able to keep my calories that low Monday - Thursday.  I can do it when I am working, but it is really hard when I am home.  Sometimes I think I will just quit dieting, eat normally (whatever that is) and just let my weight be whatever it is.  I have a friend who weighs probably 25 pounds more that me and she is not at all what I would call overweight.  She is just average in size.  The only problem is that when I gain weight, it goes to my stomach.

There was one time that I weighed 10 pounds more than I do now and this lady at church says to me, "You look good with a little weight on you, but don't get fat"  It hurt me so much I cried the rest of the day, went on a diet, and lost 16 pounds (6 pounds below what I weigh now).

My problem with healthy eating is that I hate fruit (all kinds of fruit) and I only eat 3 kinds of green vegetables ( LeSeur English Peas, Delmonte French Style string beans, and fried okra).

Anyone want to make suggestions?  I am ready for a change.  Many of you suggested when I posted about this before that I should try WW, but I am just so sick of dieting.  I am ready to just eat normally, but I don't know what that is.  Does anyone here not diet?  Do you just eat and let you weight be whatever it is?

I am going to be brutally honest: we gave you a ton of healthy eating suggestions and you ignored them and continued down your path of self destructive eating habits. What you are doing is dangerous and you need to stop. Being thin is not worth your health. I would seriously suggest a dietician or a nutritionist because you clearly cannot control your own habits and need someone to guide you in the right direction.

Bloomie - I'm going to echo what Farrah said - I think you should see a dietitian and/or a nutritionist. Also a therapist or counselor who specializes in eating disorders. An eating disorder isn't just anorexia or bulimia - it's any kind of "disordered eating," which is what I think you're experiencing. I saw a therapist for a while about my binge eating, and it really helped.

As for the WW, it's really NOT about dieting. It's about changing the way you eat. You can eat whatever you want, but it teaches you how to eat in a healthier and more conscious way. There are TONS of really yummy recipes on the website too. Or order yourself one or two of the WW cookbooks. Lots of good recipes - just open up the book and start trying some. Hopefully that will help you expand your eating options.

I have to echo what the others said. What you're currently doing is at the very least counterproductive, but also very dangerous.

What scares me the most is that you said twice in your post that you don't know what it is to eat normally. Meeting with a dietician, nutritionist, or a therapist sounds like it could really help you learn how to eat normally, but it also sounds to me like you have some body-image issues that could stand to be resolved. I don't mean this to be hurtful in any way--I just want you to be happy and healthy.

FWIW, WW isn't really meant to be a "diet" so much as a way of learning how to make healthy choices so you can "eat normally" and still have guidelines so you don't eat out of control (at least, that's my impression of it, my mom was in it for a long time). I mean, with WW you can still have chocolate cake if you want to, you know? You just have to cut back in other areas. Which is how "normal" really should be.

I agree I think you need to see a nutritionist. I think you have obstacles and aversions that the average person can't really advise you on any more than anyone has already.

If you don't like fruits or vegetables, eating healthy ain't gonna happen. Wish I could tell you differently but fruits are vegetables are a big part of a healthy diet.

I'm coming into this late - but I agree with the others - I would suggest seeking out some support for your eating issues. I personally don't have experience with WW but have heard many great things about it - and that is about education not dieting.

As for vegetables one suggestion I have is trying to "hide" them in food - the Sneaky Chef/Deceptively Delicious cookbooks have loads of recipes for people who don't like veggies. I'm thinking of trying this for my DH... he hates most vegetables.

bloomie - I don't have any suggestions for you but I want to tell you that I can relate.

Growing up, we always ate cheapie junk food, tons of spaggetti, mac and cheese, baloney, candy, and cake. I have been overweight for most of my life. Most of my adult life has been spent on a diet. I constantly cycle between dieting, then taking a break, gaining it back, then having to burn it off with a diet again.

For some its not so easy as "eat right" esp when you didn't really learn what right was.

It sounds like you are being really hard on yourself and almost starving yourself during the work week :(

It may be the most beneficial to get to the root of the problem and talk to a therapist or some type of specialist.

I think you should just focus on being healthy (inside and out) and not fixating on diets and numbers. I know that's easier said than done, but hopefully you can move in that direction.

I didnt read all the responses yet, but what stuck out at me was this; if you want to eat normally, eat normally. You don't need to starve yourself all week and then pig out. Eat a sensible amount every day and you'll feel much more satisfied. Leave the pigging out to special occassions (birthdays, vacations...)

I guess I'm pretty much echoing what everyone else said, but you've got to educate yourself (and I would suggest with guidance from a nutritionist/ counselor) about what healthy eating is. The truth is, when you learn about what's good for you and what's not, many times it will turn you off of the bad stuff when you realize what it can do to your body. If you eat whole, healthy foods (again with the fruit and veg - i'm sorry, but you're an adult - you can learn to do it!) then you don't have to worry so much about calories and portion size, and it makes life alot easier when you're not calorie counting.

The bottom line is - please please please just go see someone who knows about this stuff and can help you. You're not the only meat and potatoes kind of person out there, they'll know how to help you.

Agreed.

How can one not like fruit or vegetables?  Have you tried them all?  Fresh, prepared different ways?  I don't see how you can be healthy without eating them.

I agree with the people who said that fruits and vegetables are part of a healthy diet, and it's not going to happen without developing a taste for them. You don't have to all of a sudden eat only fruits and vegetables, but you do need to start adding them little by little to your diet until you find out what you can enjoy. It's a fact that whatever we eat the most of, we tend to crave. If you eat fast food all the time, you will crave fast food, so you have to retrain your body. I'm from the south, so I understand about not eating a lot of veggies growing up, but you CAN change your likes and dislikes.

Agreed again. If you eat normally 7 days a week, you won't be starving and tempted to binge like crazy on the weekends. And binging usually makes you feel crappy anyway. It's rare that I stuff myself (even on special occasions), but when I do I feel like a stuffed little piggy and all I want to do is lay around. Eating normally will give you tons more energy, too.

I might have mentioned this here before but this conversation reminds me of that scene in Bridget Jones' Diary (I can't remember if it's in the book or movie or both) where Bridget is talking about how many calories she's eaten in the past few days/meals/etc. and her guy friend (the poof) asks her, "don't you need 2000 calories just to exist?" and she and her other girls just stare at him like he's sprouted a 2nd head.

But listen, I know your frustration. I've been there time and time again. I don't know why I used to fight a reasonable diet so much. I always felt if I could do these drastic things (detox, grapefruit, atkins, extremely low-cal, extremely low-fat, etc.) then that meant I could control myself, what I was putting in my body, and therefore my weight. As it turns out, the more I tried to control myself, the more out of control I was.

I finally went to a nutritionist and a doctor that specializes in eating "issues." I meet with her once a month, more if I need to, and I'm sooo much healthier and better at making good food choices. I'm technically on a "diet" but it's something I can work with and something that's reasonable for me and my lifestyle. I don't think about food nearly as much as I used to. Although I enjoy food and all of the good stuff that comes along with it, I also realize my life doesn't have to revolve around it. Now it's more of a sustaining thing than a reward/punishment thing for me.

If you decide to do WW, you might want to consider the meetings. It sounds cheesy but it's nice to hear and see other people who have struggled with all the same things you have, big or small.

Thanks everyone.  I am going to check into WW.  I have a good friend who is doing that.  I would mainly just want it for maintenance.
