Dance class clothes
Permalink Closed

OK so I am going to start going to dance classes again. I haven't been since I was a cheerleader in HS, but I really need to add something new to my workout for cardio. I want to look cute, and all my workout clothes right now seem to be annoying me. My pants are pretty good, but my tops, usually a sports bra and a fitted tee seem to get in the way. It seems that all my sports bra do the roll up thing and all my tees are too little or too big. Can anyone help? I want it to be functional and cute. I don't want to be concentrating on my top versus learning a new step. Thank you so much!!!

Totally agree. I run in those all the time and I love them. I get a lot of my stuff at Target. They have a lot of tank top shirts, they are pretty supportive.

www.discountdance.com

This is where all the professional dancers and instructors get their stuff.

These would be fine if you going to a studio geared more towards teens/adults or to a class at a gym.

If you're going to a studio that also teaches children and/or has more of a family environment, you'd be better off with something like this (with your pants overtop of course).

Great ideas so far. The classes that I will be taking are hip hop or jazz. So I won't need a leotard. The place teaches all children and pilates too. This will not be a serious class, where I will need "real" dancer clothes. I also will not let me stomach see the light, so any options for tops that are more covered, like a tee would be appreciated. Thanks everyone!

I didn't see any work out clothes there? Did I miss something?

What kind of dance are you going to be doing?

Discount dance is a great site with great prices, and so is dancewear.com. I think dancewear.com has slightly better customer service. However, I only buy dance brands for the "important" stuff, like tights, leos, shoes, and occasionally warm ups. For jazz or hip hop class, I wear yoga pants or similar - and I get them at target or nordstrom rack. Yoga pants and cami tanks with built in bras are my staples. I also love rip-stop pants (available on either of the two dance sites) for warming up and wearing over leotards to cover my big butt.

I was replying while you posted your last, I guess.  I agree with you that you don't need "real" dance clothes for jazz or hip hop. Here are some pics from Nordstrom. There is better stuff at Target stores than on their site. I love capri pants for dance class, because it keeps your ankles free for turns and jumps - sometimes long pants can get in the way. I wouldn't be afraid to wear low-cut tops, either, if you are comfortable in them. Most classes I've taken, the people are pretty sassy! Where do you live?

I used to be in dance, and I got a leotard from Wal-mart around $10.  THe reason I like the leotard is cuz I don't worry about skin showing around the stomache area, if that makes you uncomfortable.

I am in Atlanta, and since I haven't been to a dance class since 2000, I really want to stay non-dancy. Although that is a good point about why a leotard would be good, to keep the tummy in! I am just afraid of looking too into it. This a class for people who enjoy dancing as a form of exercise, not in a way that people are really trying to perfect the craft. The last class I went to was just people in regular workout clothes. I would love some tops or good sport's bras that don't roll and maybe some tees that are longer than a regular tee. Actually what do y'all think of some of the old navy tees that are similar to C&C? I am good on pants, although that is a really good point about the ankles and I will wear my cropped yoga pants. I am still open to suggestions though. Thank you very much for all of your help.

Really, the most respectful thing for the teacher is to wear a leotard and tights. I know that might seem crazy, but the whole point of taking a class from a teacher is so they can correct you and make sure your muscles are working correctly. They can't see your body if it is covered in baggy clothes.

I have been dancing for about 8 years, and this is generally what I wear for classes--

for ballet/modern/lyrical

for jazz/tap/hiphop

I wear same as above, but add jazz pants

Shoes that I would recommend--

Bloch ballet shoes (canvas split-sole are best)

Sansha jazz shoes (ALWAYS black, again, I like canvas split-sole)

Split sole tap shoes are HEAVEN, and always in black ( I like Capezio)

Some more tips--

Most teachers want you to wear black leotard, pink tights

Canvas shoes are much easier to break in

Split-sole shoes are easier to dance in

Wear your hair in a bun

Higher-necked leotards will allow you more freedom- less pulling up during class (very distracting)

Always introduce yourself to your teacher before class begins, and thank him/her after class

Bring a water bottle

Hope that helped!

Edit-- just read that you won't be taking 'serious classes', but I'm going to leave all this info here, in case someone needs to know, in the future.

Amelie, I do appreciate your advice though, I will take some things into consideration, but I guess the way I could really describe this class, imagine that someplace like LA Fitness or Bally's teaches it. I actually found a cute outfit at Walmart, they have a Danskin line there for cheap, so I will look for a pic and post it. :) Thank you for all your help, and I will know more after the actual class next week.
