I think I'm going to buy a motorcycle...
Permalink Closed

I had been thinking about getting a scooter for tooling around town.  The only problem is that they are just too slow for my main commuting road that is 45mph.  I'm pretty sure I want a motorcycle, even if it's a toy to just drive to work and to friend's places once a week.

I found this totally cool vintage motorcycle (1971) that's not too much more powerful than a scooter at 100cc (scooters are typically 50cc, although you can get more powerful ones.)  Anyway, I love vintage vehicles, and this bike is in pristine condition.  I'm going to go look at it on Tuesday...

And no, I don't know how to ride a motorcycle, but I do know how to drive a stick and the principle is the same, it's just the instruments are located differently.  I know the basics, am having a friend teach me, and am going to take a safety class in the next couple of weeks.

I'm really excited (and I deserve a toy!) here she is:

This motorcycle spent most of its life on a US Tacom base. The stickers are still on the fenders. Gas tank was professionally cleaned and coated, New battery, Spark plug, Carb cleaned, Oil changed. Starts on first or second kick every time and runs perfect and blows no smoke. One of the cleanest vintage CB 100's out there. Paint is in exceptional condition for the age of the bike.

OMG I'm so jealous, I want a motorcycle soooooo bad but DH would freak out if I asked for one. I have this weird pink lady fantasy I guess.

Good for you! DH has had several over the last few years and my brother recently bought one due to rising gas prices and his commute. DH has been riding since he was between 2-4 (his dad is a safety instructor) so he taught me and is helping my brother familiarize himself before his safety class. Here you can get a discount on your insurance for taking the safety class and they also give you the license test during the class. A lot of states don't have a helmet law (we don't) but DH always wears his. My brother wasn't going to until DH told him he would NOT help him unless he did. It is very dangerous for motorcycle drivers and you never realize until you ride. I've actually heard more commercials about looking out for bikes (which is great!) I see more and more bikes as fuel prices rise. I'm sooo excited for you!! and that's a great looking bike! I would totally have one of my own too...but the baby is still too small to be riding yet lol. If I can learn anyone can...you are gonna love it! Congrats clap.gif

Colette - what's a pink lady? Also, I'm buying the bike on the down low... I'm actually buying it this Tuesday and will stash it in my friend's garage until after the safety class (which my husband knows I'm taking, but shakes his head about.)  When it comes right down to buying a bike, I think I would get some push back from him, so I'm doing it on my own.  Besides, it's only $1500, and I've spent more on bags and dresses, so it's not like I'm breaking the bank.  I did decide to get this bike instead of a new bag though smile

luckyclover - glad to know a fellow STer can ride a motorcycle! I totally agree with you on the safety issues - I want to be really careful on it.  That's part of the reason I got a low cc, it's better suited to city riding (I will not be taking this out on the highway!)  We do have a helmet law, although I think I would wear one if we didn't - not worth the risk!

How awesome! Oh, and it's an old kick start motorcycle - love it!! My dad used to have an old Honda kick start when I was little and he used to sit me on it to take pictures. He now has a '95 Fatboy which is also pretty fun to ride on (with my dad of course, I don't know how to ride). You'll have to post pics when you get it.

yes, old kick start.  a friend of mine has a 74 cb125 and I've been practicing on that.

I happen to love fatboys and joked about turning the little cb100 into one - that would look hilarious!

I do like harleys, but that is so much bike to hold up for a woman... I bet it's a cool bike!

Funny you should mention that it's too much bike to hold up. Funny thing...about a couple of years after he bought it, the bike and I had a little accident. Our dog, Mike used to sleep in the garage so sometimes he would pee in there. My mom had told me that day hose down the garage and use the mop to push out the water. Well, since my dad was upstairs and the bike was right where I needed to clean, I decided to move it myself. Uh, bad idea, when I went to "park" it, I guess the kickstand wasnt' down on all the way and the bike tipped on it's side. I called my sister in a panic because I didn't want to tell my dad what I had done - all she could do was laugh. Somehow, I don't know where it came from but I managed to find the strength to pick the bastard back up by myself and w/o my dad finding out. The foot thingy (where you rest your feet, you know) was kind of bent upwards but he never questioned it. How would he ever figure that I had been messing with it, haha.

OMG - hilarious! I be he would have never imagined that scenario - he must have thought it happened some other way or that he did it himself...

it would be kind of funny to tell him about it a few years down the road.

I know, isn't it?  I figure it's a step of from a scooter, and I find that scooters are just a bit too cute for me (and slow!)

I'm actually getting very jealous. I've been looking into a scooter, as a gas-saving alternative to my car - but I've had the same misgivings - slow and can't find one I like (ok, I know it's supposed to be about saving gas, but I don't want to look like a TOTAL dork.) And Vespa's are too expensive and I'd look ridiculous with one in Texas.
That one is everything I would want in a bike/ scooter/ motorcycle. I love everything about it.

p.s. - pink lady is that "gang" in grease - the girls were the "pink ladies," remember?

That is awesome! My fiance is a motorcycle fanatic and we had two vintage bikes for awhile...but I never got around to learning how to ride. We ended up selling them a year or so ago. I still regret not learning. Now he has a sports bike and I'm too scared to even ride on the back!

ah - ok I remember.  And all the reasons you stated above is why I chose this bike.  One issue is I have to mix my own gas since these were made to run on leaded regular (no big deal and super cheap to do), so keep that in mind if you start looking at these.

this one is just like my friend's (except different color) currently at $860 on ebay (shipping costs would be a bitch though)

That is so awesome!! How do you mix your own gas? Can you just fill the tank 50/50? Or you have to mix it in a seperate container, then fill the tank?

It's actually like a capful of additive to a gallon of gas. I'm imagining I'll just buy a plastic gas container put the additive in then add gas in the proper amount.  It's only a 2 gallon tank and approx. 100 mpg, so it should be pretty easy to just keep my own gas at home.
