I'm sure you've probably seen every book that has ever been written on this, but I just love the book, "Beyond Jason & Jennifer." It helps you generate many ideas by categorizing names in a bunch of different ways. I like Claire and the idea of 3 names instead of 4.

Also, the most popular names of 2007 list came out last month, and the article linked to this really cool site. You can search names in almost every conceivable way from year-to-year and get the statistics on them. Really fun.

Since you don't have any family names that you like what about characters from books that have special meaning for you or great historical heroines?

I'm totally obsessed with the site that pollyjean posted and I also like to check out the Baby Name Voyager which takes the SSA data and turns it into chart of the name's popularity going back to the 1880s.

I really like Kate Sinclaire Hawethorne. I have a friend who named her daughter Katherine Claire, that might be pretty too. They call her Kate or Katie depending on the day. Another idea is to look up names based upon their meanings, maybe something will peak some interest there. Best of luck and Congrats!

I think all of your choices are beautiful. I especially like Kate Sinclaire.

I don't plan on having kids but if I ever changed my mind and had a girl I'd name her Lorelai Cate Pitt (I'm assuming Brad Pitt as the father in this scenario, of course).

I'm Irish and I've always held a special place for Irish mermaid folklore. I even wrote my history thesis on the role of mermaid folklore in 13th century Irish pop culture. As a result I love the name Lorelai. My only concern would be that people would think of Gilmore Girls, not Irish folklore, which would be my intent (not that naming your kid after a Gilmore Girl is all that bad either!).

Cate is my grandmother's maiden name and I've always thought it was really beautiful. I realize it's a weird spelling for a common name, which is annoying, but since it's a family name I figure I can get away with it.

Kari- I know this isn't an option, but I love the names Oliva and Sinclaire so what about Oliva Sinclaire Hawthorne. Sorry to throw another option out there! They are all very pretty though.

Hey Kari! I just sent you a pm. I really ike Kate Sinclaire, but all of your options are nice and classic. I also prefer 3 names to 4, but that's jmo. i'm so excited for you!

eta--i thought of one more thing you might want to think about - i think the name sinclaire is really cool, but be prepared for ppl to ask you where it came from. we have semi-unusual middle names for both our children, and it sort of annoyed me when ppl, esp. family members, kept asking what it means and if it was a family name and why we chose it, etc. and our answer was always the same - we just liked the name. i wouldn't have changed anything though and if you don't think you'd care, then i wouldn't worry about it! just my 2 cents :)

I like Olivia Kate. Olivia is a classic name, but isn't super common, either.

Just wanted to butt in again to say that I love the name Olivia but it is actually quite common now! It was the 7th most popular girls' name for babies born in 2007. Not sure it matters to you though. And I do think I like Olivia Kate the best.

Also along the lines of what alb said - both my sister and I have unusual names but mine has a story behind it and hers doesn't. I always felt a bit bad when people asked for the meaning behind our names and they always said "what a nice story!" to me and my sister had to say "my parents liked the way it sounded." Maybe something to keep in mind if you have more than one!

I think Sinclaire is really pretty and she could be known as Claire very easily. Iit does feel like a surname, so you're bound to get the 'family name' question frequently.

Also if she marries and becomes a hyphenate, she'll have yet another last name in the mix.

My brother has two middle names. He's had problems with government forms, so he's pretty much dropped the second one for all practical purposes.

If the "what's the meaning/story behind the name" thing gets annoying...I would personally just make one up. Something about how Sinclair was the name of the man that Great-Great-Great Grandma moved to America to be with. They had met at the dress-shop where she worked and fell madly in love but couldn't get married because she was already married and had three kids. After her husband dies of cholera, she decides to move herself and her three young children to America to search for the great love of her life. Never finding him, she instead finds success and wealth as a dress-maker to the Industrial Revolution millionaires.

Ta-da! That could explain the great fashion sense and the name!

This is why I prefer the three names to four. DH has a hyphenated name (with no middle), and it causes a myriad of troubles with filing, mail, forms, etc. Also, DH likes to lay kinda low, and his name causes people to constantly ask him 50 questions about it and tell them their name-related stories. He has unofficially dropped one of the names.

I love Olivia Kate but I know two people who have named their babies Olivia in the past few years. It is very popular now. Personally, I don't think I would let that bother me but I am not in that situation so I really can't say.

My BF's sister's name is Siobhan (pronounced Sha-vaughn) and I think it is so beautiful.

Jahni and I like Olivia Kate Sinclaire Hawthorne, but my husband says 4 names is ridiculous!

Anyone have any opinions or suggestions. None of them are super original or spectacular, but yet they are all pretty classic I think. We have some time to keep thinking, but we keep coming back to these.

I am open to any suggestions. All I can think to myself is that when she is filling out college applications and job applications, I want her to have a well-rounded, respectable name...nothing crazy.
