Cape Cod - help!
Permalink Closed

We're doing a bachelorette/shower weekend in Cape Cod over Labor Day. I'm thinking Provincetown and one of the other BMs is thinking Mid-Cape. Any thoughts? We need a lot of rooms or one big house. We will probably be a group of about 15, maybe 20. We'd like to keep it under $200 a person ($3,000 to $4,000 or less) for the whole thing.

Does anyone have any ideas? Can anyone help? I've been looking at vacation rentals and I'm pretty sure my eyes are bleeding. I could really use some expert knowledge about the area.

I don't have any location assistance I can provide, but a great vacation rental site is Vacation Rental By Owner. http://www.vrbo.com

I don't think you'll find a ton of nightlife on the Cape, but Hyannis will have the most non-Capeish stuff to do, including the most shopping. IMO, it's the least charming of all the towns, though. Falmouth is very pretty and might be less expensive for finding a rental. It's toward mid-Cape. Provincetown would be more expensive since it's on the outer cape, but it's very charming.

Definitely you have to do P-town. We did my friend's batchelorette there and it was so much fun. Labor Day weekend will be a great weekend too, since it's like the last party of the summer.

Provincetown has a great party scene. Every afternoon is the Tea Dance at the Boat Slip, which is basically just an excuse to party in the afternoon. There's a huge indoor/outdoor deck with a pool, and it's always packed with people. You should check out a drag show -- Varla Jean Merman is a P-town legend who does a great show at the Post Office Cabaret. There are 2 shows every night (or most nights), and I would suggest getting tickets in advance b/c she sells out. There's tons to do at night -- clubs, dancing, and town in general is just fun. The shops stay open until 10pm every night, so there are always people walking around at night.

There is great shopping in Ptown too. Commercial Street is lined with great, boutique-y stores and gallerys.

As far as accomodations, I would suggest trying the Provincetown Inn. It's big enough that you all could stay there. I think at this point you may have a hard time finding stuff for Labor Day weekend b/c everything up there books up early in the season. Their rooms start around $200/night. The rooms aren't super nice, but standard hotel rooms. It's walking distance (5-10 minutes) to the east end of town, or there is a shuttle that goes into town or to the beach that will pick you up right in front of the Inn. They have a private beach and a pool. (The pool is a whole scene of it's own during the day, which is a lot of fun.) Herring Cove Beach is beautiful and walking distance from the Inn.

There is also such great food in Ptown. We love the Monkey Bar for sushi, asian fusion, and martinis. Clem and Ursi's is great for happy hour -- from 3-6 they have $1 oysters, clams, and shrimp. Lorraine's is really good upscale Mexican-inspired. Way Down Town is good for mojiitos. There's a new place that opened last summer that's in the same building as the movie theater that does cafeteria style amazing food.

Oh, and Clem and Ursi's does catering, and will deliver clambakes to either your hotel (we have stayed at the Ptown Inn with a large group and did this. It was a lot of fun -- we had rooms with adjoining decks overlooking the water and ate out there). You can also do clambakes on the beach -- Clem and Ursi's, and there's another company that does catering, will deliver to herring cove beach. They will even bring a whole set up and cook for you right there on the beach. you can arrange to get a bonfire permit (you have to do this in advance since they only give out a certain number of fire permits each day) from the national seashore ranger station, and then just hang out on the beach with a fire and eat.

Other things to do: Dune Tours -- they take you out through the dunes, bike trails -- rent bikes and ride the trail through the dunes, Pirate Museum, spas...

Let me know if you have any more questions. Obviously i am a huge fan of Ptown -- we go to Ptown a few times every summer -- so i'm happy to help.

Damn, damn, damn! I was a big proponent of Ptown as well (just on reading up on it) but one of the other girls has family in the mid-cape area and wants to stay there. Since it is a co-bachelorette party and she's the co-bachelorette, I can't really argue. But we are thinking about going to Ptown for a day/night, probably Saturday night. If we can only do one night, what do we absolutely have to do?

Edited because I'm practically illiterate tonight.

ummm, what kind of stuff are you guys into? is it a partying group or more mellow?

If you are more into the eat/drink/party thing, this is what i would do:

Daytime: Go to Herring Cove beach which is beautiful, or go to the pool at the Ptown Inn. The pool is open to the public. They have a bar and i think serve food there too, so it's definately a scene.

or--

hit town and cruise the shops and galleries on commercial street. (they're all open until 10pm too, so you could do this later)

Afternoon: Hit Clem and Ursie's happy hour at 3 PM(3-6), eat clams, oysters, and shrimp. for drinks try the bloody mary (comes with a crab claw in it), mojitos, or watermelon lemonade.

Then go to the Boatslip for the Tea Dance (4PM-7PM):

http://www.boatslipresort.com/teadance.htm

Every afternoon at the stroke of four, the deck of the Boatslip is transformed into Provincetown's biggest outdoor dance party. Hot bodies, good friends and great dance music make this daily event a "must-do" for seasoned travelers and first-time visitors alike. Resident DJ Maryalice, a Provincetown favorite for over 25 years, "mans" the wheels of steel, blending high energy house and club hits that leave the crowd breathless and begging for more. On Thursdays, DJ Maryalice turns back time as the Boatslip Resort hosts the wildly popular Solid Gold Tea. Dance classics from the 70's, 80's and 90's are the order of the day and judging by this heavily attended weekly event, the second time around really is better than the first! Check out our Events Page for the full 2008 Tea Dance Schedule.

Evening: See Varla Jean Merman at the Ptown Arthouse. She's a Ptown legend and does an amazing show. Buy tickets in advance b/c she sells out. The show starts at 8, but there is a "film festival" which starts at 7:15 (not sure what that means ...)

Oh, and i guess you'll have to eat too at some point ... The Monkey Bar (also referred to as The Lounge/Thai Fusion Bistro) is in the West End and has really good sushi and thai food. They also have a huge drink/martini menu, and the owner is awesome. They serve food late too -- until midnight, i think.

Bubalas is good for lunch, ok for dinner. They have a big outdoor patio right on commercial street, so it's good for people watching.

Frappo is right in the arthouse, and they do a gourmet cafeteria style thing -- you pick an entree and then 3 sides. the food is really good, and it's also fast, so a good option before the show.

Lorraine's is in the West End, has upscale mexican with a huge tequila menu. its a small place, so make a res. for a large group.

Night: there are different places to go each night, and i can't remember which place is saturday. there's always the a-house, which is right off commercial on masonic place. it's a classic spot for dancing. purgartory is a leather bar which can be fun too. and again, the monkey bar is one of our favorite places to hang out too -- they have couches you can lounge on and we always end up meeting interesting people there. That was where we met some guys when we were on my friend's batchelorette weekend who made us one of those "lists", but it was a ptown list -- stuff like "make out with a gay guy", "get a drag queen's wig", "get a gay guy's underwear".
