for 2 nights in late July. I'm going with my family and we are staying at a State Park. Any tips?

My only tip is bug repellent. The last time I went camping, no one thought to bring any. I looked like I had the chicken pox.

Other than that, have fun!

I love camping!  I hope you have fun.

Hand sanitizer! Also, a bandanna or to keep your hair out of your face. You'll be really happy to have it on the second day. Bug repellent. Extra socks and some pre cut moleskin if you're going to do any hiking. Matches. Sunscreen and some kind of lip balm w/ sunscreen.  A flashlight.  The most important thing to bring is marshmallows! Don't forget them. wink

I normally backpack, so my campsites are usually pretty remote, so I don't know if any of this will apply to you but:
* a bear bag if there are bears in the park. I just use 2 heavy duty trash bags and some rope. I put all our food trash in one bag in food in the other, then put one inside the other. I can't throw very high, so DH ties a rock around one end of the rope and tosses it over a tree branch (10 feet up and 3 feet away from the base of the tree is a good rule) and then we hoist the bag up until it's 10 or more feet up in the air.
* water purification kit
* a large water bladder bag for your campsite
* a small folding saw for firewood gathering
* small knife
* toilet paper!

I love camping because I think it is so fun and relaxing!  Make sure you have comfy lawnchairs preferably with cup holders to sit around the fire.  Also, bring a good range of clothes because even though it's July and it may be hot during the day, you will be sleeping outside and it gets cool in the middle of the night especially with the dampness the dew can bring on.  Also, if you have trouble sleeping in the silence of the night listening to whatever sounds nature decides to make, maybe bring a battery powered fan or a ipod or something to fall asleep to.
Have fun!!

Um... a lot of serious meds? Camping in Texas in July? Are you insane? I'm half kidding, of course, but what kind of camping are you doing? Will there be showers? Cabins or tents?

If there will be showers, bring shower shoes (or flip flops). 2nd on the bug repellent. I need it to go outside my house these days.

Spf 30+, baby powder for your hair, travel wipes (or baby wipes like Alliegurl said) for pseudo-showers and cooling off, flashlight, portable air mattress if you have one (my camping friend has one that blows up using a car power jack), lots and lots of water, and whatever food you guys will be eating.

You really don't need that much for camping but it depends on what you're planning to do. Are you planning on fishing? I'm guessing if you are you'll know what to bring for that. What about hiking? If you plan on hiking or "exploring" in tall grass, bring boots. I'm sure I don't need to remind a fellow Texan to be careful of snakes in grass.

Oh and I guess bring some anti-itch cream or lotion in case you get bit by something.

And did I mention meds? I'd consider refilling any prescriptions before I went... wink.gif

blubirde, I think we are crazy for camping in July! Hopefully it won't be too bad.

We are camping at Garner State Park. They have showers and we are staying in a tent. We are going to go swimming at the river maybe tubing. They also have mini golf. For sure, we are going to do some hiking.

I'm starting to make a checklist so thank you girls for all the helpful advice.
