austin hotel?
Permalink Closed

Hey, I know this should be in the travel section but I really want the traffic -
I've been hired to do a promo gig in Austin, and they have alotted me $100 for a hotel.  I very much wanted to stay at the Hotel San Jose - a modern, hip place, that is pricey but has three rooms at a low rate because they share a bathroom - I love nice hotels, and never can afford to stay in them, and wanted to use this opportunity to really enjoy myself!  Unfortunately, those three rooms are all already booked, even though I called 2 months in advance - the next step up is almost a hundred dollars more.
I then tried the austin Motel, not as nice, but across the street from the san jose (so I can still enjoy their amenities maybe) and known as a landmark in austin, frequented by musicians and artists (my kind of crowd.)  They were booked too!
I really really really don't want to stay at like a La Quinta or Homestead Suites or Holiday Inn, etc, because even though technically the company is paying the $100, I feel like if I'm spending that on a hotel I should enjoy it, plus that night will be like a mini vacation for me if I can stay in a hotel I like - also sometimes cheaper motels gross me out.  I just have become somewhat paranoid about the sheets and cleanliness.  I'm not a snob, just probably too many dateline exposes!
Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations?  I didn't expect everything to be booked up so far in advance and want to try to nail down something before everything is out of my price range!
In Dallas there are a ton of great hotels - Palomar, the W, the Zaza, etc, and in advance you can usually get a pretty good rate (not that I take it, I live here, just sayin') and they're great to stay in - they have character, etc - it just seems like maybe that phenomenon hasn't reached Austin yet?
Blubirde?  anyone?  Ideas?
TIA

I don't know if you wanted something that you may have to put in a little more for or not, but the Hyatt Regency is in a great location. It is a nice hotel and is just off of South Congress which is where the Hotel San Jose is. Some of the trendier hotels are also pricier in Austin. If you do have to go with one of the chains that are within your budget the Drury Inn on 35 is one of the best ones. There are several crappy ones in that area, but the Drury Inn, while it is not in the most trendy part of town, is close to many places to eat and I also felt safe when we stayed there.

I agree with joy about the hyatt regency. It's a chain and nothing special but it's got a great location - close to downtown and South Congress, where the san jose is.

Downtown there are some nice hotels: the Driskill (if you've never been to the bar there - do it! It's totally crazy Texas but it's one of my faves in town. be prepared for cowboy hats and cow hide couches. it's that cool. wink.gif); the Stephen F. Austin; and the Four Seasons (where all the celebs stay when in town for SXSW).

Both the Driskill and the SFA are very nice and have tons of history. The Driskill is supposed to be haunted. Nice. But they're both very pricey. You might be able to get a good rate, I don't know, but it's worth a try.

I can't really think of many more "Austin" places. The ones on South Congress that you mentioned and the ones I covered are about it I think. I'll ask around tomorrow to see if someone can think of more places.

Check out www.austinchronicle.com. You might be able to find some interesting lodging suggestions there. (It's the alternative weekly - I'm sure you've seen it when you're in town.)

Post if you have any questions about places and I'll help you out.
