I'm a couple days late on this, but I had to tape it so I just watched it.  What'd you think?  Worth the wait?  For some reason I thought the feel was different than previous seasons.  I can't put my finger on it.  This might be because I read that JJ is trying to go more mainstream this season with more self contained episodes, so that might have affected my judgement.  It seemed like it felt a little more mainstream though, nothing too tricky to understand, no cliff hanger, etc.  I also do not buy that Jack killing Irina was what was in that file.  Here's an excerpt from TWoP's recap of the finale,

So, more fighting and jumping and kicking. Syd corners Moronen with a big handle or something, choking her, and Moronen says, "If you kill me, you'll never know the truth!" "This is the truth!" hisses Syd. "Sucks, doesn't it?" Hee. Moronen gets away and says, "You think the CIA couldn't find you when you went missing? Or that you learned what happened to you by chance?" Syd ignores her, and more fighting ensues. They both pick up shovels and go at it. When there's a break, Moronen continues, "If your mother's really been helping you since she left, why haven't you ever spoken to her?" Syd's all, quit trying to buy time, you mousy little twit. More hitting and kicking. "You can't believe that both you and your sister just happen to be agents," says Moronen, performing a slice with her shovel. "This isn't gonna work!" says Syd, performing a slice of her own. "There's a bank in Wittenburg," gasps Moronen. "A numbered vault! Proof --" Syd launches an attack, and Moronen counters. Kicking. Hitting. Shoveling. Urm. Yeah. So, Moronen somehow corners Syd with her shovel handle, choking her on the ground.

"We're both pawns in the same game," says Moronen, doing that familiar I Am The Villain So Right Before I Kill You, I Must Tell You Everything dance. "The difference between us is I know who controls me." Syd spies something across the way -- a gun, I'm assuming. Moronen sees this. "Who controls me?" asks Syd. "I guess you'll never know," says Moronen.

Jack asking for permission to kill Irina just does not fit with what Lauren said to lead Sydney there.  Also, here's what TWoP said about he file last season,

Syd pulls out the inner document and then grabs her pocket black document reader and goes to town. First thing we see: TOP SECRET. Second thing: PROJECT SAB47. Third thing: INITIATED 17 APRIL 1975. That's Sydney's birth date, in case you didn't now. Fourth thing: PROJECT: ACTIVE. Fifth thing: SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER: JACK BRISTOW. Get it? Syd's actually a top secret CIA project, and her dad's been in charge of this "project" since the beginning.

How could that file possibly have been about Irina?  I think there's either more that Syd's not letting on, or maybe she didn't get to read the whole thing, or REALLY sloppy writing.  Anyways, what'd you guys think?

I don't know Maddie, I was wondering that myself. I thought she was upset because she was the project. And I kinda thought that's what she was getting at when she argued with Jack (in this episode) about what kind of agent he thought she was. And when she was talking to Sloane saying she wasn't going to put up with crappy people anymore for the greater good. But then when she said he had her mother killed, well, I just don't know. Maybe JJ figured no one saw enough of the paper to guess his original intent. Maybe he figured a super-spy school/project would be too much for this season. But if the whole emotional roller-coaster with Jack is going to be over Irina's death, I don't buy it. Seems cheap. And for the sis to be soooo emotionally tied to a mother she never met enough to vow revenge, when she's supposed to be a good guy? I don't but that either. Something's up or JJ's going the easy route this season.

But, other than that (which officially prove I have too much time on my hands), I thought the episode rocked! It felt more like the first or second season with all the personal drama. But what's with Syd and Vaughn getting together so soon? How to sustain that through the season? She better get to have sex with Sark (or Sark better get to do naked shots - whichever) or I'm going to have a fit!

How cute was Marshall when he said he'd had lunch with Sark a few times to see a familiar face? Hee - I love him.

A Syd/Sark hook up would be amazing.  Or a Maddie/Sark hook up, whatever.  Also, I'm looking forward to Vaughan proving himself as cool again.  He was so lame last season, I'm not entirely sold on him again yet.  And Marshall is so cute!  I loved when he was like, "Sydeney - Sloane is here!"  I'm a huge nerd and watching it again right now.  The feel was different, and there was some sloppiness, but it was a pretty good episode.

I'd forgotten all about that Marshall part! He's so hilarious! Everyone on the show is so freakin' stiff and uptight and then there's Marshall. Such the little kid.

You're not a dork. If I had it on tape, I'd watch it again, too! Vaughn was really lame last season (hated it) that I'm looking forward to a tougher, more together Vaughn. He showed signs when he rescued Syd from the hanging train thing. That was classic Vaughn. Now if only he'll offer her sound words of advice instead of crazy-talk (remember when he used to be her handler - the good ole days), it'll be much better.
