Dining Room Table decor?

so we have this beautiful 10 foot kitchen table and I'm having the hardest time looking for something to put on it. How would you decorate it? I'm open to any and all ideas at this point. We've been here 2 years and still haven't figured it out so help please!!

well, from what I recall of your decor, it's dark wood and stainless mostly?  I envision a large/long sculptural aluminum/stainless bowl that you can put fruit and vegetables in...

from vivre:

if this was in silver, it would be perfect... but the brass doesn't look too horrible

The following two are round, but I think they could look nice...

Some pics of people's dining room tables are on this thread:

Do you want something eclectic, traditional, or what?

I would probably do a runner and maybe a grouping of related items - love the idea of silver.

Or maybe a couple of circle-shaped placemats in the center, each with a bud vase. These are beaded, from Horchow:

We eat at the table about once a week and when we have small dinner parties ( about once a month)
The rest of the space is pretty eclectic, we have orange walls, blue sofa big windows and mirrors. So we could really put anything on the table!

is it lame to just "set" the table with actractive plates, linens, glasses and silverware?

i'm not very good at home decorating.

First, I thought you were specifically talking about a kitchen table vs. a dining room table (thought you had both.)

I think it's important to keep whatever you put on the table low -- it's better for conversation (you don't want to be looking around something to see the person across from you.)

What is the light fixture above your table like? that could drive the look and feel you're going for as well.

This table sounds similar to your's -- they just lined up some plants on it.
