Help!!!! What do I wear... *Update* Pics Posted

I got tickets to one of the touring Broadway shows - Thoroughly Modern Millie (my fav) for next Friday in New Orleans.  I've never been to one of these so I don't know the dress code.  My bf is going all out since it is also his b-day and close to our 5 year anniversary.  He's doing the really nice hotel downtown, dinner at a nice/decent restaurant (the $15-$20 entree range) where you do reservations, and tickets to the show.  So while I am technically on a shopping hiatus I have no idea what to wear and this might be an emergency/necessity where I can break it for now.

So I know on FH this was posted and it was said to look nice but not to over do it because you don't wanna look like country folk dressing up for a night on the town or something similar (not sure the exact quote but it was cute like that).

In my closet I have a LBD, a Jones New York LBD with a print on it but very summery to me, some semi-formalish cocktail dresses (think juniors department homecoming type dresses - short, burgendy with a swirlish print with black glitterish stuff over it - I'll take a picture later tonight to show it).  What do I do?

IMO, travelling shows have a slightly more casual dress code.  I think I would stay away from any glitter and go with the LBD and a cute cardi or shrug (maybe beaded if you have one) and some pumps.

Even with regular broadway shoes, the dress code seems so random these days...you could get away with anything. I think a non-glittery dress (like the LBD) with a cardi and shrug, as LMonet suggested, is appropriate for the occasion.

Here are the pics of dresses in my closet.  Which one is best or should I just head to the mall?

Blue Dress (short)    closeup of print  Its a navy raised print with a few sparkles here and there not trashy sparkly.

Wine Dress (long)  Spagetti Straps. Formalish I like it but have never gotten to wear it.  I'm afraid it'll be too much but maybe not. It doesn't look any worse than a LBD.

Navy Tank Dress (short) Not my fav

Black Short Dress

Black Short Dress with Blue Stripe

I also have a plain black cocktailish dress.  Tank Style with draping in the back. Short length.

Thoughts?

how short is the black dress with the pink flowers. it has potential, if it's not too short, and would look nice with a cardi and cute shoes.

I'm here in NOLA and I think your black dress with the pink flowers would be perfect.  Of course you know how our ever changing weather is so I would have a back up just in case it snows again.  Ha! Ha!  Seriously, if you have a nice coat that is good enough back up.  Have a wonderful time.  It's good you guys are having your celebrations before the Mardi Gras parades start.

i like the black dress with pink flowers also.  what is the fabric of that one? i think you could definitely spice that one up and you'd be fine--maybe with some type of a fur-collared or sparkly cardi? something subtle but dressy, depending what the fabric is.

is there any way you could shorten the wine dress? I could see that with a brooch, cardi and pumps - it might make it more wearable in general for you.

The black dress with flowers is a Jones New York so whatever their dresses are made out of thats what this one is (sorry I'm at work and can't look at the tag)

the Wine dress I don't have enough time to fool with it for next week so I'll just have to get it shortened for another time.  Thanks for the idea though!

I second shortening the long dress. Can you take a pict. of yourself in the dress and post it? Maybe we could make suggestions regarding the length and accessories.

lsu - it would be easy to drop the dress off at a seamstress/tailor and shouldn't take long to do - will be a lot cheaper than buying a new dress...

The last think I want to do is hurt your feelings, but I'll be honest, I don't really like any of the dresses, they look a little dated - I just felt the one with the most potential is the full length one (shortened.) Either that or look for a new dress... sorry, sweetie....

That's how I feel about them all too.  They are mainly the basic emergency type dresses for funerals/sorority events and such.  I have a love hate relationship with most of them so no hurt feelings at all.  I kinda hate them all right now anyways. I'll have to call around to a seemstress and see the time range for fixing that dress.  How short would you make it? I'm 5'3 if that helps you at all and the dress is pretty straight with a small drape across the boob area.

I would have it shortened to just below or just above the knee - they will have you put it on there and pin it where you want them to hem it to - I would look at how both lengths would look and go with the one that is most flattering to you. I would ask for the extra fabric too - maybe you can make a pillow out of it or something :)

I would go for just below the knee but have it pinned both ways. I think if you added some gold strappy heels and maybe something like this scarf: http://tinyurl.com/455kf
you would look fantastic.

I bought the above shimmer scarf (in gold) at jjill and it looks fantastic paired with a pair of gold strappy heels that i own. The scarf (at the store) is only $15.

Just a thought

I like the black one with pink flowers and the cocktailish dress sounds great too but I'd have to see pic to be sure. If those don't work I'd say mall it.
