i am so sick of washing stuff according to the instructions and having it shrink. my jcrew wife beater style tanks, which i only wash in cold water and never put in the dryer, have shrunk a full 2" in length (i measured them against one i just bought). they are now to short to stick our from under other shirts, which was their job. i bought a bunch of those gap scoopneck longsleeve tshirts that were on sale a while ago, and with the second wash they were totally out of shape and too short.
so how much shrinkage is acceptable and how much is just wrong? i really don't feel that clothes (no matter how much or little they cost) should be good for 2 or 3 wearings and that's it. i know i got these tanks and tees were not a lot of money, but goddamnit i think its wrong that they shrunk like that.
I hate it when that happens! You really shouldn't have to play they 'allow for shrinkage' game. While I kind of expect it from cotton tees and tanks, it REALLY bothers me when it happens to pants. Gap is good about taking their stuff back b/c of shrinkage (I returned a pair of stretch cords that shrank 3 inches in length!), and just remember to buy a size up in the future. As a general rule, things with stretch in them are less likely to shrink and/or lose their shape than non-stretch stuff.

I probably shouldn't be recommending this, but here's what I do: I wash the clothes in cold, then when I take them out, I manually stretch the piece vertically and then lay them to dry to its longer length. It works pretty well for my stretch sevens, I usually have my mom help me pull the legs, hehe. For shirts, be careful to hold and pull from below the arm holes since you probably wouldn't want the arm holes stretching out.

i do this with a lot of my tops! damn, my long torso.
i have an enormous torso too. you know, you'd think with all of us long-torso'd chicks, they'd have a line of camis and wife beaters and tees for us. hmmm. i dunno, i'm just saying. for god sakes, at leat j.crew should have long torso sizes for their beloved wife beatrs.
