Does anyone feel like they are shopping too much and feeling guilty about it? I've been on vacation and keep shopping. Now I have buyer's remorse. Ugh...
I completely feel the same.....my boyfriend and I just went to Europe for our 4 year anniversary over Thanksgiving. We decided that our trip would be our anniversary and X-mas presents to each other.....but I couldn't help myself and ended up getting him an ipod for x-mas!
And I mostly got cash for x-mas from family....I should be saving, but I can't help it.....I blame my shopping addiction to being bored at work.
Ummm, yeah. I'm in college and poor. I should have saved my christmas money. But yeah, I spent all $400 in three days! I do feel really guilty...BUT...I have new clothes, yay!
Ohhh yeah...I've been feeling guilty for shopping too much since the beginning of SUMMER! And yet I can't stop! And I just threw out a bunch of clothes and shoes from my closet, and that's my incentive to buy even more!
I know I'm a compulsive shopper, but I truly can't stop and I don't think I want to!
As a grad student, I don't have the cash to shop...but I feel guilty about WANTING to shop alot. I think to my self, "Here I am coveting another pair of shoes when people are dying of hunger, recovering their loved one's bodies from the tsunami"...ect. Then I wonder if I am being to hard on myself...or not hard enough
I can relate to all the posts here. The compulsive shopping thing is worse for me in some ways because of the internet. However, at this point in my life, it's easier to regulate. When I was making more money, I also spent more on Prada shoes, Gucci, Manolo B., etc. (and only wore a flat spectator pair of the MB on a semi-regular basis to work).
In this era of war in Iraq, and now, the tsunamis, it does cause people to think about their habits.
BTW, Dr. Phil would give me a hard time about shopping. He did it to a married homemaker woman who was spending too much on everything (not just clothing, since she had a house and a child). I really monitor my "hobby/passion", since I purposely left a career that was not for me.
If you can afford to shop, and need to look great, do it!!!
i was reading another fashion forum and a person had this to say re shopping. essentially she argued that fashion was her hobby and that shopping was just buying supplies, in the same way that a painter would buy paint. i thought that was pretty interesting logic.
anyway my thoughts are this, as long as you aren't going into debt, and wear the things you buy then you're okay. the fact is that really horrible things happen in the world every day and we are powerless to change that fact (though i do strongly urge you to contribute in some way to help the people who are affected by these events), so while i sympathize with these people, and have done something to help, i don't feel "guilty" and instead try to remember to count my blessings everyday.
Those are wonderful sentiments. In fact, what you just expressed sounds like how I feel. If shopping is a passion, why give it up?
Re: the tsunami, does anyone know if most of the non-monetary donations are being taken in and around NYC? I live in the DC area, and have not heard of many donation drop-off areas for supplies.

i think at this time they need money most. i'm sure that in the next few weeks, as they start rebuilding, they'll have a better idea of what sort of supplies they need and provide information on where to drop them off. if you're in the metro area, you could probably contact the embassy for one of the impacted countries and they could provide you with info. regarding non-monetary donations.
the people who should feel bad are the fcking wall street dudes who get $100K+ bonuses. and worry about getting another porsche when they already have three. i wouldnt' feel bad about buying a few items of designer clothing if i were you. for god sakes, we're not the elite here on this board! no one making $1m would post here.

come now, we all posted our holiday hauls. i know that "computer thing" that you got is 18k gold. and those antique salt and pepper shakers? i bet they came from the latest kennedy auction. i think we all know that there are high rollers amongst us. aren't we getting ready to have a competition to see who donates the most to tsunami relief in the "current events" section?
