50 best fashion moments of 2004 (vogue)

so what did you think of this list from the january vogue? i thought most of the things they picked were either boring or just awful.

here are some of the ones that i found online. the full spread isn't on style.com for some reason. actually these are most of the better choices.

carolyn murphy and karen elson (left and middle) were on the list
selma, not andre.

Oh Vogue, Vogue, Vogue.

First of all let me say that I read Vogue, every month. However, Vogue is more like the (OK, I'll use a literary/media comparison) NYT of fashion rather than the uber hip blog everyone's reading. What I'm saying is - Vogue is good for some things (identifying and reporting on mainstream fashion trends, fantasy shopping etc.) and not so good for others - I cringe when vogue thinks it's edgy. I haven't seen the issue, cc, but just from what you posted - my reaction is a big old MEH.

Sienna Miller's only on the list because she's the latest young, blonde it-girl. Put that dress on some B-Lister who's never had sex with Jude Law and it wouldn't get near Vogue.

SJP - I like this woman but *enough with the poufy princess dresses already*! Yes, they look good on her, but she's definitely in a rut with this particular style.

I'm actually pretty neutral/whatev on the rest of the gowns. I see they managed to wedge Isabella Blow in there as the token 'unique' fashion character (that is her in the headgear isn't it??). I hope Vogue pays her a healthy stipend for her continued services as cred-lender.

If anyone's interested, British Vogue is much better than American Vogue is one is after a little more risk-taking and a little less celeb back-patting.

i honestly wonder how much effort went into this list. i think they probably came up with a list of people that they had to include - important "fashion icon" actresses (sjp, nicole kidman), socialites and royalty (christ you have to see princess caroline's "fashion moment." i think it's a moment from 1987 that got mixed in with the folder of 2004 moments by mistake), plus the "quirky" people (isabella blow, rachel feinstein, hope atherton) - and then just picked out a photo of them at a major event, regardless of whether or not they were wearing something amazing.

good god, rachel feinstein, hope atherton, ahn duong and at least one schnabl are featured in every single issue of vogue. it really fills me with rage for some reason.

LMAO at these comments. And I totally agree with both.

As I am guilty of pretty boring, nonedgy style myself, I have to say I like most of the pics. Christina Ricci's is my favorite!

this is why i don't read vogue. not that it's bad or anything, it just seems so irrelevant, as evidenced by this list. interesting, but not really groundbreaking. but i will say i love cate blanchett and think she has amazing style.  sienna miller has done nothing of note in the states (aside from date jude law) to warrant all this media attention. if she's smart she'll follow gwyneth paltrow's example and try to parlay her "it" status into a career, or at the very least her own vogue cover.  i always have mixed feelings about sjp, she definitely is in a rut with those dresses. and while i think she personally has nice style, i feel like the line between her & carrie bradshaw gets so blurred in the sense that her role as carrie elevated her to her current place of fashion icon, but much of the credit for "carrie's style" belongs to pat field.

honey, i think you're right about SJP --  if she hadn't played carrie, she wouldn't have the same fashion status she does now.  the dress i like the most in those photos is selma blair's, but for the most part i think the choices are kind of boring.  IMO, Scarlett Johanssen looked better in that yellow satin Calvin Klein she wore this year (I think to an event at the Met?) and Gwen Stefani's Louis Vuitton getup at the VMA's was very cool.

I absolutely and completely agree w/ you, honey.  SJP certainly always looks lovely at events and she has good style, but it was Carrie's style that made SJP a unique fashion icon.
