they're both the same price.  I'm not even sure if i'm going to get either of them yet.  the only warm coats I have right now are a white puffy jacket and a tan sort of dressier long coat.

Definitely go with the red one over the plaid - the plaid is a bit too "Griswold Family Christmas" for me.

The green plaid! I have the coat and I really like it. It looks great with jeans or dressed up. I have not seen anyone else wearing etiher. I figured I would since it was from J. Crew, but not the case.

I am digging the plaid one, you can work a lot of combinations with it. I am not drawn to the red one, only because I personally do not like the color red. Where are the coats from???

no, the fur is part of the hood, which is not detachable.

Okay I peeked at the JCrew site so my opinion might be biased.  I will be honest and say I don't think the coat is worth its price, even on sale. 
But if you really love it, by all means get it.   I definitely prefer the plaid one because it's more unique.
