Engagement photo outfit
Permalink Closed

I have engagement photos this weekend and I have no clue what to wear.

The photos are being taken on a beach in San Francisco, so there's the potential for wind, although this past weekend it was insanely hot, so it's a little hard to know at this point.

I feel completely clueless as to what I should wear. I kind of want to use this as an excuse to buy a completely new outfit.

Any suggestions?

I think a beige, off-white or white dress would look lovely with the beach setting, with a cardigan if it's cooler.

A friend recently bought this dress and it looks gorgeous on her, so it popped to mind although I'm sure the ladies will come up with some other great ideas:

I love that dress, but I was just reading photo tips in a past issue of Allure from some famous "re-toucher" and he said you shouldn't wear white in photos (apparently it gives you a bit of a floating head lookk). I personally think it depends on your coloring, but I just thought I'd mention that.

What is future DH wearing?

The engagement photos I see are very casual. Did you check Killa's thread? Most of the suggestions were for simple classic pieces that won't make your photos look dated.

I love the idea of wearing all-white (both of you!) for photos. To me, it just looks so classy and elegant. I would suggest a casual knee-length dress of a flowy material like a modal or rayon blend, because it would look beautiful catching the wind.

If your photographer is good and knows what he's doing, there shouldn't be a problem with you wearing white. I see pictures of people in white all the time, and my husband, daughter and I have done family portraits with us wearing white tops (+ jeans), and they look great. Besides, isn't your wedding dress white??

My cousin did a family portrait of her with her 2 kids at the beach, wearing white tops + jeans and it looked great, if you want to go that route. But personally for engagement, I would go for something a bit more dressy (but not too dressy) like a casual white dress.

I just bought this Splendid dress in white and I LOVE IT. I want to wear it for family photos. Normally I wouldn't suggest empire waists because they can be tricky (preggo factor), but the gathering along the waist isn't too much.

Just wanted to add a couple more thoughts. I would normally not suggest the white/off-white/light beige colors for a photo like this, but at the beach, these colors look great! I think that if you and your fiance matched too much (e.g. both in white tops with jeans) I personally think it might be a little cheesy for an engagement photo. But if he did a white shirt with khakis or even seersucker if he is a preppy guy, I think it would look fantastic with you in a flowy light-colored dress.

Oh yeah! I was gonna suggest a white shirt + light khakis for him, but I like littlebean's idea of seersucker pants even better!
