This is building off of Kitty's post. So I have a question, what is the point of these sights? I know so many people who have profiles ( is that what they're called) on these sights and have wanted to do one as well but I wasn't sure what they were for, or what do you use your for? Is it for social networking with people you already know or for meeting new people? is it more for personal or professional use? And for a novice which sight would you recommend?

Facebook is WAY better.

I use it mostly to keep up with my friends that live far away, or that I don't get to see that often. You can view their photos, get status updates, etc. so it makes it easy to keep up with what's going on in people's lives and drop quick notes/comments.

I also use it as a way to kill time at work -- taking quizzes, adding applications, playing games, etc.

I like facebook way better, too. My friends who like myspace like it better because it's more customizable, but facebook is cleaner and easier to use, and waaaay less garish.

I play scrabble, etc with my friends states away. We trade pictures, post links, send messages, etc. Like Kitty said, it's a great way to keep up with everyone and see what's happening in everyone's lives. I learned about my cousin's engagement on facebook before he even got around to calling everyone!

My impression is that myspace is more geared towards meeting people that you don't know, and facebook is more for keeping in touch with people you do know. I've never heard of anyone meeting a stranger on facebook (although I've had a couple random people message me before)

I have facebook to keep up with friends, too. It's a lot easier and way cheaper than international phone calls. Plus I can sneak in and look at it during work. Myspace always gave me issues, and Facebook is much more user-friendly to me. It's mainly for personal use, but I know some people who look up potential employees on both sites.

I love facebook! I use it mainly to keep up with friends from school- especially with people that I'm not super good friends with, so like people I care about and am interested in, but maybe wouldn't be calling on the phone or emailing a lot (if at all). Its also helped my reconnect with people that I had lost tough with.

facebook started for students only, but now, other than the allowable aesthetics, I think it's basically the same as myspace because it's open for everyone.  I would say the same percentage of strangers have tried to friend me on myspace and facebook.  Though on facebook you can't just look at everyone's profile like on myspace.

I joined myspace in 2004 just to be able to read my little sister's blog.  But as for use with my own generation, most people I know joined myspace, not facebook, in the last couple of years, so I don't spend much time on facebook, yet.

myspace is more customizable, can be overwhelming.  I happen to think it's a little edgier and cooler.  I like that you can add music.  Facebook appears a little more reserved, nuanced, calm.  But if you strip it all down, these two social networking sites are the same, but with different demographics.  Because of it's beginnings, Facebook has more of the academics, while myspace just has the whole mix of crazies in this world.  biggrin

For me, both facebook and myspace are for reconnecting with friends from my hometown and keeping up with those who I don't see often and new friends if I make any.  I love looking at pics of people I haven't seen in forever and seeing their pics of kids too.  It's better than having it downloaded into my email inbox!

I have been on facebook since it started way back when, but I much prefer myspace.  It just seems more user-friendly to me, but I do get random "friend" requests on it, whereas that never happens on facebook.

Collette - Different people use MySpace for different purposes.  Remember how we used to pass notes in school?  I think this is the equivalent activity for many high schoolers.  I remember going home and writing long letters to my friends and passing it to them in between (or during) class.  It was one of the ways we communicated.

Also, I like MySpace best because I enjoy expressing myself on the page.  I like featuring a new song on my page based on my mood or which artist I am obsessed with.  I just cretaed my own background using one of the layout generators.  It was so fun to choose colors, fonts, background photos, etc.

Both sites have provided me and my friends with many opportunities to re-connect with old friends.  I have MySpaced with people whom I haven't seen in 15 years on these sites.  I wasn't looking for them either.  I just was putting my personality on the page.

A few of my friends live 500-700 miles away, MySpace lets me keep in touch.  I don't like the phone at all, so that's probably another reason.

I have very little experience with Facebook, but I find it so difficult to explore.  I have to admit that I enjoy looking at people's MysPace pages just to see what they're up to - -even if we never connect.

I guess I am in the minority, but I don't get into either one. I actually despise them. I have had a lot of friends that have been harassed by creepy people on those sites and I think that they are a petrie dish for perverts. It just seems like people put WAY TOO MUCH of their private lives out there for any person to see and I think that they encourage this crazy "Look at me! Look at me!" culture that we are living in. Lastly, at almost 32 years old, I feel like I am just too old to be playing around on those sites.

That being said, I do not think any of you girls are creepy, quite the contrary, I think you are all lovely:). I just totally hate those sites.

Oh, an as an FYI, there are tons of companies that look prospective employees up on those sites and have been known to decide against making an offer once they saw a person's page. I have also known of 5 teachers in the Chicago area that were fired because of their MySpace pages. The moral: if you are going to be on those sites keep it clean and ask your friends to do so as well.

I totally agree with keeping these pages clean, that includes content AND pictures!  I can't believe what some people will post on the internet!  Basically I don't put anything up that would upset my mother, so that includes employers too.

I use both Facebook and MySpace to keep in touch with friends. Most of these people, I would lose touch with if it weren't for these websites. I have both my Facebook and MySpace profiles set to private and I have to know you to accept a friend request.

Of the two, I like Facebook better, but more of my friends are on MySpace.

I use, or I should say, my business uses, social networking sites - Myspace, Linkedin, and a couple that are specific to the consciousness/wellness world. It's a great way to post bulletins, event invitations, and build a circle of contacts you want to keep tabs on. These days "the company you keep" says a lot to other people, so I think having MySpace contacts shows the type of people or groups you surround yourself with.

I think it's a good idea to sign up with a couple, if you have the time to monitor and update your profile and respond to networking opportunities, whether they're for friendships or other purposes. I have not used Facebook because traditionally it was just for students.

Long before there were these sites, I had an "Internet stalker," and I suppose it's true that today it's easier for pervs to find someone to harass. However, sites do a much better job protecting their users than in the past.

And I never post my real name, real email address, or an identifiable photo of myself on the Internet.

I was one of those employers.  I was ready to hire a "young lady" a few years ago but decided on whim to look her up on myspace.  I ended up changing my mind on her simply because of the provacative pictures and the fact that she was bragging about doing drugs and drinking under the influence on her page.  Due to the nature of the job (she would have been a sales rep for my company and driving in a territory was part of the job) I passed on her.  Her myspace page cost her a really great job!
