Use Recruiter to find job?
Permalink Closed

I am not exactly running away from my job, I just realize that I really don't see a future in it, and am bored at this point.  Its not that its not challenging, its just work that I am not interested in, at a job I am not interested in.

So I've been sending out my resume via Craigslist and Career Builders.  For every 30 resumes I send out I get 5 phone calls.  I notice that most of the jobs I am seeing are offering less than half of what I make (I am not overpaid either).  I had two "rough" interviews this week, was grilled thoroughly with obnoxious questions like "tell me about my company" and if/then scenarios.  I am not perfect but I think I did well but still haven't heard from either of them.  I also noticed both of them were trying to condense 2 fulltime jobs into 1 midpaying position.  I'm guessing this is due to the bad economy, esp with fashion being such a hard field to break into in the first place.

Should I start seeing a recruiter/employment agency?  Does anyone know of one who specializes in fashion/beauty in NYC area?  Any advice for me?

TIA girls... :\

First, I would recommend creating a linkedin page (it's kind of a myspace for professionals.)  You can create your page using your resume.  Start building your connections, then get some recommendations from them on your page.  Many recruiters use linked in for candidate searches, but many require that you have at least one recommendation before they consider you.

I also did a people search in linkedin using keywords: beauty fashion recruiter new york

Several recruiters specializing in these areas appeared in the search results.

This guy looks like he might be what you're looking for: http://www.linkedin.com/in/anthonybianchi

Good luck!

Recruiters are very helpful in finding a job, especially in a big city! Every job I have ever gotten since I moved to Chicago has been through a Recruiter. The key with Recruiters is having good follow-up. Make sure you check in with them and let them know you are still in the market, eager to go in interviews, etc. I know this first hand because my BF is a Recruiter. He is very good at his job (been doing it for 9 years), but he has so many candidates he tends to favor the ones that really put themselves in front of him. That proves to him that the person is a go getter and that they are not lazy. This is important because he wants his clients to be happy with his placements, otherwise they will not give him anymore business. The best thing about them though is that they are an automatic in for you at a company. I applied to the position I get hired for at Playboy through their website over 20 times. Once I found a recruiter she had me an interview in less than a week and they hired me in less than 2 weeks. It isn't that I didn't have a good resume, it was that these companies get so many job applications they can't go through them all. When I was a hiring manager I would get 200 apps for one job through CareerBuilder. That was just too much to deal with so I just used Recruiters.

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but how would you go about finding a recruiter?

I would definitely try a recruiter. Also, I'd check any local papers you might have. Thats the main place that we advertised when we were hiring.

Good luck!

I agree with D about linkedin. It is a great way to get in touch with some recruiters, as well as people that work at companies where you would also like to work.

I also think that getting a recruiter in the area you live/want to live in is a great option. For the area I live in, getting a recruiter is the only way to break in to one of the industries.

Good luck!

Question about linkedin - I know my boss and managers are on it, use it and have found other employees on it. Is being on it an obvious "I'm looking for a new job!" or is it more subtle? Just curious bc I know I'd get fired if they knew I was looking.

I dont see why they would get mad. In fact my manager is the one who sent me the original invite. I work with external customers so it is a way for me to connect with them as well.

I really view linkedin as a networking site.  Most of my coworkers are on it, and I've used it to stay in touch with past coworkers.  If it makes you more comfortable, you can deselect job opportunities as an interest on your page.

I, for one, am not looking for a job, but I have a linkedin page...  Seriously, just view it as a myspace for professionals, because that's essentially what it is.  The fact that there's recruiters on there is secondary, IMO.

OK so I'm on Linked in for less than a week, I have already reconnected with old bosses, coworkers, and classmates. I love this thing!

Will let you guys know about the recruiter prospects - thanks alot D for the idea!
