This is really interesting. Have ya'll heard about this?
On March 29, 2008 at 8 p.m., join millions of people around the world in making a statement about climate change by turning off your lights for Earth Hour, an event created by the World Wildlife Fund.
Earth Hour was created by WWF in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and in one year has grown from an event in one city to a global movement. In 2008, millions of people, businesses, governments and civic organizations in nearly 200 cities around the globe will turn out for Earth Hour. More than 100 cities across North America will participate, including the US flagshipsAtlanta, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco and Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
We invite everyone throughout North America and around the world to turn off the lights for an hour starting at 8 p.m. (your own local time)whether at home or at work, with friends and family or solo, in a big city or a small town.
What will you do when the lights are off?
Join people all around the world in showing that you care about our planet and want to play a part in helping to fight climate change. Dont forget to sign up and let us know you want to join Earth Hour.
One hour, America. Earth Hour. Turn out for Earth Hour!
I'm glad you posted this. I heard about it in my ideal bite email yesterday. I'm pretty good about my electircity use already but plan on shutting everything off tonight for earth hour.
I just saw that google is black today for earth hour....very cool to see how others do their part! So many people see google, I hope that helps to jump start others.
Not to be a Debbie Downer...but participating in this event doesn't actually do anything other than show your support for the environment. It doesn't actively do anything because the electricity is still being produced- which is by far the more polluting and worse of the two (using and producing).
If everybody took the message of this event to heart and turned off all electrical items when not in use, than maybe maybe eventually something good might happen. Don't leave lights on in the bathroom or the hallways and use the dimmer switches whenever possible. Don't plug your toaster, coffee pot, etc when not using it. That sorta thing, practiced all the time does much much more than turning the lights off for an hour.
It's like that stupid Nickelodeon thing a while back where they stopped running shows for an hour to force kids outside to play. Right, like an hour's worth of play was really going to make a difference.
Sorry to jump on anyone here, I just find these sorta things to be sending the wrong message. Sending a message is great, but there has to be actual worthwhile information in that message.

I don't think you're a Debbie Downer, I think you're a realist and you're better informed than most on the subject.
To me "events" like this are intended to raise consciousness in order to ultimately create a shift in awareness. The actual net gain in power usage seems less relevant than sparking some sort of change in people's heads, as Grace said.
I've spent two decades seeking the right way to communicate to people why they should live more responsibly, sustainably, consciously. I've found it's effective to create an understanding that people should care/act because it's preferable to feeling impotent, voiceless or victimized by others.
