i need to bitch- UPDATE

So I have had awful back pain since early December.  I am not talking sore muscles or a stiff back in the morning, I am talking I cry at least once a day I am in such pain.  I have been to 4 different doctors and I am finally going to a doctor at the Mayo next week (I've been waiting for 7weeks to get in). As you can imagine, working out isn't the easiest thing to do when I am feeling like this (plus I've been forbidden by all 4 doctors) so, as a result, I have lost all the muscle I gained this summer at boot camp and gained fat.  I feel disgusting, I look disguting and I am trying so hard not to be a debbie downer about this.  I have a history of nasty body image problems and I don't know, this has just really sucked.  With spring on its way I want nothing more than to hit the gym and go running, go cycling, do SOMETING. I feel so lazy! Ugh, someone please join in on the bitch fest!

--Update--
So my doctor called today with the results and I have 2 bulging disks with degeneration (?) he was very short and seemed to be in a hurry so I'm kind of confused and have a lot of questions still. He said his secretary will call me on Monday to set up Physical Therapy. The way he was making it sound was like this is a minor thing and i will be fine. i hope this is the root of the problem because i have been in sever pain 100% of the time the last several months. IDK. anyone had either a bulging disk or degeneration before?confused

I dont have anything to complain about, but I just wanted to say don't get so down. I know it must be tough seeing all your hard work melt away, but it's not really something you have control over. I'm feeling the same as you...I want to get in shape for summer, but I AM lazy!! haha I hope you can get everything figured out with your back so you can start being active again. After seeing your posts you seem really motivated, so even if you get a late start I know you'll be in the same shape as you were in no time!! I hope you feel better :)

With pain that severe I say you're entitled to be down. Please oh please let this doctor figure it out...you're scaring me a little!

You sound super motivated so I know you will get right back to being active once you're feeling healthy again.

Both of these run in Mr. Elle's family, actually.  Their's is a progressive genetic condition which yours is likely not however, so hopefully once you're fixed up from this it won't happen again.

The degeneration means that the padding in between the disks in your back are a little thinner than they should be.  I'd clarify if the doc means that this is occuring just near the bulging disks or over the length of your spine.  You might need to adjust your exercise habits in the future to lessen the impact on your spine, maybe with an elliptical instead of a treadmill, swimming, making sure you're not lifting heavy things with a repetitive motion?

Bulging disks are usually due to inflamation, and when they swell/bulge they press on the surrounding nerves and cause that radiating, sharp pain.  If they are due to inflamation caused by an injury/activity they do normally go away once that injury is healed or the activity is stopped.  But if your body is creating this on it's own, then I'm not sure how it would go away without surgery.  In that case they'd go in a suck out the soft filling in the middle of the disk cushion, to keep it from bulging again in the future.  Leaves you with less shock absorption ability the spot would probably be more ache-prone when you're older, but you won't be in constant pain!

Mr. Elle started having these same problems a couple years ago.  He'd been lifting weights alot and had put on almost 20 lbs because of it.  The combination of the extra weight and repetitive lifting of heavy objects had the disks in his lower back bulging really badly, and his nerves were so irritated he could hardly walk.  Once he stopped lifting the pain gradually went away.  He's reduced the amount and time he lifts weights now, and tries to be careful lifting other heavy-ish things and it's kept him out of trouble since then!
