I survived a tornado

I don't know how much national attention it got, but there was a tornado in downton Atlanta last Friday.  BF and I where there in the thick of it outside.  It was terrifying and now I can't quit thinking about it.  We'd been at a photography exhibit in the park and had no warning of what was coming.  We started back to the car when it started raining and made it about a block before the wind became too strong for us to move so we huddled down in a parking lot with glass, metal, and other debris flying around us.

It probably doesn't help that I work downtown and see the damage every day when I come to work.  There are windows out in all the buildings around me, and streets are closed because there is still falling glass.

I wrote about it in more detail here http://www.mandyandbryan.com/?p=35 if anyone is interested.  I actually had my camera that night so I posted a few pictures there of the damage and I have taken some more this week around the office.

Part of me is weirded out by the whole experience and I just want to get over it, and part of me thinks this is really cool and I feel the need to tell everyone.

oh my god, Mandy! I'm so glad you're okay! I didn't have time to read your whole blog post right this second (I'm at work) but I read a little and saw your pictures... that must have been terrifying!

WOW. Amazing. Is that CNN's headquarters?

I'm sad for Bryan's shirt! It's really cool. Hope the bloodstains come out.

I heard about the tornado on the news but to hear a first-hand account is truly shocking! I'm glad you're alright.

The SEC basketball tournament was here last weekend so there were tons of people in town. Luckily the game went into overtime so everyone was safe indoors. Also that night there was a Hawks game, the photography thing (really cool -http://www.redbullillume.com), a dentist convention, and a home show; some how there were no deaths and only minor injuries.

The CNN center was in the middle of it and sustained a lot of damage. I've been watching the repairs from my boss' window. Its a good time to be a glass installer in Atlanta, my building alone has 203 windows to be replaced.

Bryan is so upset about the loss of his shirt. We both threw our clothes from that night away except our jackets.

Yes - It got quite a bit of attention.  Very scary.  I'm really glad to hear that you're okay.  I think a naive part of me thought that a tornado couldn't or wouldn't strike a big city/downtown area, so it was a real shock to hear what happened.

I'm glad you're alright! That was all over the news. And the next day we got the remnants of those winds here in NC and that was scary enough!

Glad your okay! That is one of my biggest fears (I grew up in tornado country, but was lucky to never have one hit my neighborhood). I think its odd and scary that so many people think tornadoes don't hit cities. I was on a train platform last year at rush hour with tornado sirens going off and no one even flinched- except me, I was freaking! During the coverage of the Atlanta tornado, an expert I saw said the only reason it seems that cities are protected is that there is just more rural land than urban land in this country.

eta: those pics and story are incredible! So glad you guys are okay.
