I haven't seen the trench, but I own this shorter one. Maybe it's the ruffles and the tie but they look similar to me. Anyway... in general J.Crew coats/jacket/outerwear are exceptionally made for the price. I ordered this pink one from the store and I was surprised how BRIGHT the color is IRL. Unfortunately I've had one other color issue (when ordering without seeing it first) with their coats in the past as well. Bolder color than pictured. That would be my only concern with this tomato red one... which I love, btw!

I was just in the JCrew store a few days ago, and while I don't recall seeing that exact jacket, I did see these:

Both were fantastically made and well-cut. JCrew coats, I think, are extremely well made. Over priced maybe, but definitely wonderful pieces of clothing. I think it's definitely worth a drive over. I would call first and make sure it's even there, though!

The closest JCrew to me is about 300 miles away (probably a good thing) but I think it is gorgeous. I just love ruffles. As far as the price point, because I sew I would say that it is not worth the $250 since something like that would be so easy to make. However, if you don't sew and it is well made, it may be worth the money.

Thanks, everyone! I've had great experiences with jcrew's winter coats but I live in Wisconsin and I'd probably only wear this in April, May, September, and part of October, so that's why $250 seems a bit steep to me. But I really love it and I have to buy a new spring coat because I lost mine last month when we flew to Florida, so I think I'm going to go for it anyway.

Easy to make? Really? You must be quite an accomplished sewer! I've been sewing for many years and don't think I can look at that jacket from any angle and see it as an easy project. I'm certainly jealous of your skills! :)

I should have been clearer. It would not be worth $250 to me personally, because I think it would be easy to make.

One thing I meant by easy is that it does not appear to have any buttons/buttonholes. You could just get a basic long jacket/coat pattern and extend the front edges a little so that you can fold the top corners back for the collar effect. Then make a ruffle and insert it between the lining and the fabric around the edge. Make a sash and tie it around it. If the sleeves of the pattern are long, shorten them to 3/4 length.

See... I didn't look at it like that at all. But you're right! I guess I assumed there were buttons and I know it's fully lined and I've never been good at ruffles so that did it for me. (psst, wanna come over and show me some of your mad ruffle skills?)

The only reason I can do ruffles is because I learned to sew children's clothing first. I started out smocking and then graduated to lace shaping and ruffles, etc. Otherwise, I would have no clue. Now, I would just rather sew for myself because you don't get nearly the money out of children's clothing for the time you put into it. Don't you knit? I havebeen trying to teach myself to crochet. I am sorry I am hijacking this thread.

I saw that jacket in the catalog and feel in love with it, but when I tried it on in the store, it didn't wow me in the same way.
The color is a nice orangey red shade and the length was good (around knee length), but the ruffles seem flat and not as cute as the picture suggest. It's a little hard to describe, but the ruffle feature on the trench is not as pronounced as the picture and it left me disappointed. Perhaps it would look cuter on someone else though.

Awww, that sucks! I'm really sorry to hear that, although I'm kind of hoping I don't like it either - then I can settle for something less expensive :)

I love that trench too. I thought about buying it but the price turned me off as well. I'm in an area that for the most part it is either hot or cold (we had a blizzard on Saturday and today it was 60). We don't have enough days when I could wear it to justify the price.

It may, however, show up at the JCrew Outlet next season-lately, the outlet gets a lot of the same styles as the regular store you just have to wait it out ...I'll be looking to see if it does!

I saw someone wearing this yesterday, actually. I actually didn't like it that much (it wasn't oh so flattering and the ruffles weren't as cute as you'd think).
