hair color question

I was extremely light blonde about 3 months ago and decided to start going back to my natural medium brown color.  My colorist lowlighted my hair--she basically pulled it through a cap and put brown on it.  I liked it ok but it took some getting used to. Well, I let my roots really grow out and there was enough of them that my hair looked sort of funny so I put Robert Craig light chestnut color all over my hair.  I like it okay, but I am just sort of unhappy overall with my hair.  I am afraid the dark makes me look older.  I am 37.  One minute I want to get it cut into a short hairdo, but I am afraid I will hate it.    I am thinking about adding some highlights to it myself.  Maybe a lighter color will make me feel better about it.  I was happier when I had lighter hair.

I bought some Revlon Frost and Glow from Walmart today for medium brown hair.  I read some good reviews on it.  Has anyone ever highlighted their own hair?  I could always tone it down with some temporary color if it is too light.

i really don't recommend doing highlights by yourself. is there a friend that can help you? i am assuming this is with a cap?

i personally don't think darker hair looks older, i think as long as it's a shade that's not too dark for you it looks good on everyone.
