Shih tzu owners?
Permalink Closed

Does anyone here have a shih tzu?  My good friend's dog is about to have puppies and I am DYING to get one - her dogs shed very little and apparently they are hypoallergenic too.  Would you agree?  That's really the only issue for my husband, because he has pretty bad allergies, we need a non-shed dog.

If you have any fun shih tzu stories, please share!

my grandma has 2 shih tzus. They are really cute. I don't think they shed at all, but I think it's actually dander that causes allergies.

Sad story, but one of her shih tzus was attacked by coyotes in her backyard on Monday. My 75-year-old grandma had to beat them off herself. He'll be OK, but he may lose one of his eyes! But I guess you can say they are tough dogs, at least.

Holy crap, HB! Your poor grandma and dogs!! I can't believe she went after them, that is quite dangerous.

That's a great reminder that I would need to be very careful with a small dog. Sometimes I feel like I live in the wild west between the coyotes, bobcats, javelinas. Friends of ours have a cat that was attacked by a hawk in their backyard!!

we have a shih tzu mix. he doesn't shed much except for when you brush him. DH has allergies, and he isn't bothered at all by him. I think they're supposed to be good dogs for alllergies. i think they're great dogs!

I have a shi tzu. And like the other said they dont really shed... i was told by the breeder that they basically shed the same way as humans. I have really bad allergies and i am not bothered at all by my dog. If you have any other questions feel free to pm me

I had a shih tzu for 14 years! I loved her so much. She didn't shed much, but her long fur and her undercoat matted if I didn't brush her every day. If you don't have a lot of time to spend grooming, I recommend getting your shih tzu a "puppy cut" in the warmer months, it worked wonders! My dog was incredibly smart and had a pretty big "vocabulary" for a dog, according to my vet. Shih tzus are really friendly and remain very playful into old age. Mine didn't slow down until she was about 11.  She died before I got married, but I was dating DH then, and he wasn't allergic to her when we weren't living together.  Feel free to PM if you have any questions.

HB, my dog got attacked by a pit bull and survived!  She only needed stitches on her back. They are tough little dogs!

oh, that's so sad! I have seen coyotes in my neighborhood a couple of times, and I don't live in a rural or newly developed area, either.
