What do you do when you feel stuck in a job you don't like, but there are no other freakin' jobs in the town you live in??

I'm feeling very frustrated because I am bored at my current job...I just don't see myself learning anything new in the future. My boss is super annoying, over emotional, and totally unprofessional. Not to mention I do a butt-load of work for them and I'm totally underpaid. And I have to live under a stupid time clock, and it's depressing me.

I've been looking for new jobs this past year, and there is nothing. I currently work as a graphic designer, and I love the field, and I know this is what I should be doing, but the last design job I saw that looked promising, was June '07. I applied but they hired someone else. (I think it was a fake job posting within the company...they created a job for someone in mind, but still needed to follow procedure.)

I'm considering branching off on my own to create my own design business, but I don't know if I can afford to do that. Or maybe I just do freelancing until it gets going really well, and then I leave my fulltime job. I don't know what to do, but I felt the need to vent. Any advice is welcome.

aw subwolley, I'm sorry. That sounds like it really stinks.

I guess you're not willing to move, right? Is there any schools around you that teach graphic design? When I moved home my mom's friend (who works at a nearby university) basically told me to just visit her university, go to the departments that I'm interested in, and talk to the professors pretending to be a potential student going on for my master's. She said to ask them about the job market in the area, etc and use that information to target your search. I don't know how well it would have worked because I never actually did it, but it's an idea!

Hi ttara. Moving is not an option. I do like where I live, so I don't really want to move. Plus bf is in grad school, so moving can't happen right now.

That is interesting what you brought up about asking professors about the job market. I currently work on a university campus, and there is a digital arts conference coming up next month, and graphic design is included. I was considering going to this and asking around about jobs in the city.

Have you researched jobs you want, in the long-term future? Do you have an idea of what you want? Because it's hard to know what to say until you know where you see yourself.

Do you want to be part of a big firm? Have you ever started your own business? Do you know what the market is like for other freelancers/design firm owners?

I think you need more information, then maybe you'll feel less stuck.
