I agree about the ads at the bottom of the page. I think it would be better if they were down there.

Also, I know that a lot of ST gets paid through the ads, but could we move the ads to the bottom of the page? I can't scroll down to the forums until all the ads are loaded, which sometimes can take a while. It's obviously not a huge big deal--I think I'm just impatient. smile.gif

The ads do not slow the loading of the forum -- it's the content of all the posts as they're very image heavy.

also, moving posts to the bottom = no one sees the ads
no one sees the ads = no one clicks through the ads
no click through on the ads = no income for stylethread
no income for stylethread = no stylethread (or subscriber fees which no one will pay because they can go to other forums for free)

that said, stylethread's business structure is changing, and it is my hope that we will be able to reduce the number of ads in the forum if not eventually get rid of them all together.  I cannot unveil the structure of the new general site (the general site is not the forum) before it launches, but I have a feeling you will all like it smile

I am going to take a look at reducing the ads in the interim ('cause I know they're not pretty), but again, the ads do not slow down the load time of the forum, it's the content of the posts...

While I think the live chat feature is kinda cool, no one here really uses it very much, so I think if you're going to have to pay extra for it, then I'd skip it.

I agree with both of these. The loading time isn't a huge problem for me, but I have noticed that the prominence of the ads can be rather off-putting to first time visitors.

iirc, it's not the ads that take a long time to load; it's the actual forum content. bumping the ads to the bottom probably won't make any difference.

eta: oops... i obviously only read the last post sheepish.gif

do you actually have to buy something from the ad sites in order for stylethread to benefit, or can you just click on them and window shop? i always wondered...

You have to make a purchase, unfortunately.  That's why I encourage people to click on our ads to buy something.  I also do not pocket any profits -- I just let any income sit in an account to cover expenses.  After expenses, there's only a small safety net.

D- I would suggest moving Amazon to the top, since it is such a major shopping site. I have made so many purchases, but I always forget this site has a link 'cause I hardly ever bother scrolling to the bottom of the page. *pangs of guilt*

good idea - I'll work on honing down the ads and putting amazon at the top this weekend.
