Favorite machine at the gym?
Permalink Closed

I just started going to the gym and I'm trying to get into the groove of all the different machines. What is everybody's favorite machine?

I first used it in physical therapy after knee surgery, and it became my favorite machine.  I don't know the name of it, but it's the one on which you stand and do scissor kicks in all directions.  It works your hips and inner thighs really well.  Love it!  Multi-hip machine is what this company calls it.

We have a machine at our gym called "The Wave" and it's kind of like the elliptical, but it does a side-to-side motion, like you're rollerblading. It's pretty awesome. Besides that and the elliptical, I love the bike.

For cardio, I like the elliptical.  But for weight training, the Smith Machine is my favorite.  There are so many exercises you can do on it and it is very good for keeping good form while you are performing the movements.  It will look something like this:

I like the arc trainer. It's a lot like the elliptical but the range of motion is a bit different, and your legs go more up and down than forward. I guess it's kind of an elliptical/stair-stepper hybrid. Love love love.

Well, I pretty much don't like any of them except the treadmill (which I mainly just tolerate when I can't run outside).  That being said, I use them all faithfully...

Now, what I can easily tell you is my most hated machine.  That, without a doubt, is the hamstring curl machine.  The one where you lay on your stomach.  I don't mind the push down curl one nearly as much, but HATE, HATE, HATE the laydown hamstring curl machine.  I actually cheer when people are using it and it delays my trainer taking me there!!  My trainer says it is natural for runners to hate the hamstring machines because we get really strong quads, but that is why it is even more important to use it (because balancing the muscles, etc., etc., helps prevent injury)... blah, blah, blah...
